I spoke with a guy at Advanced Adapters about what I need to install a NV4500 into my 79 Chevy. I want the bell housing with the mechanical clutch linkage setup.
But they want $630 for their adapter to the NP205 transfer case. Has anyone tried using a later T case with the NV4500? I had a NP241 once and thought the shifting on it was too temperamental. I don't know if the 241 bolts to my 2005 NV4500 but the NP261 my NV4500 was bolted to is still at the wrecker's where I got the tranny for about the same price as the adapter. My 1979 NP205 works real well, but I am not too thrilled at the cost of the adapter. Thanks

Well, a NP241 or NP261 is most likely going to be a driver drop T-case... which is going to need a different front axle than your stock passenger drop front axle... so it's not an apples to apples comparison. A stock NP241 would have been a manual shift T-case just like the 261, so I'm not sure what you mean about temperamental.

What is the output on the 2005 NV4500? Didn't they go to 32 spline outputs with the round pattern connection on everything at some point in the late 90's or early 2000's?

I think I've read the '85+ 205 with the round bolt pattern will bolt up to the 4500, you'd have to figure out a tcase shifter because you wouldn't have the boss for the shifter pivot bolt.

If that is true, then the late NV4500 would have to have the round pattern and a 32 spline output.

I guess the real questions we would need to know in order to help is...
1)What did the NV4500 come out of(what was the original application)
2)What was the original combo in the truck(what was the NP205 originally bolted up to?)

NV4500 all have the 6 bolt round pattern. Your T-case choices are 85 and up 208 (my current setup), the rare and hard to find 205 round bolt pattern or a figure 8-to round AA Adapter. The later 241 that came stock behind the NV4500 is for an IFS (drivers side drop) and will NOT work with a front axle truck. I like my 208 t-case, it's plenty strong and still available. All NV4500's have a 32 spline output.

As for shifter, I'm currently using the factory shifter but I have a new ORD floor mount twin stick setup for the 205 swap. Easy Peasey.

No... as far as I know all Chevy NV4500's are 32 spline. You can also have a Dodge diesel NV4500 with a huge 29 spline output, a Dodge Gas NV4500 with a 23 Spline output, and I think there is also a 31 spline output application.

If his NV4500 is a 32 spline, and his original trans was a TH400, then this kit for a 4L80E to Figure 8 205 should be all he needs. If his original trans was a 465 or a TH350, then the input bearing hole will be too small and will need to be machined out to the large bearing size. I know that ORD does this and probably others as well.

True, but I am assuming he's using GM. What he also don't know is that the bolt pattern on the Dodge tail housing adapters clock the T-case different than the GM. I found this out when I bought a stronger aftermarket cast iron one to replace the OEM aluminum one. Yes, it bolts up but clocks the t-case right into the floorboard. Better off getting a Dodge unit and swapping the output shaft. I'm getting confused on the input vs. output shaft. Are the dodge INPUT shafts not 32 spline?

Are you asking about input into the Transmission or T-case? I don't know what the inputs are on the transmission, but the inputs on the T-cases are definitely different based on application the same way they are on the Chevys between 465, TH350 and TH400

Thanks for all the expert info. I should have given more info on what I have. I'll have more info tomorrow when I get home, but I have the SM465 tranny now with a NP205. The front axle is a heavy 3/4 ton Dana44. My NV4500 is out of a 2005 Chevy 4X4 and i'll get the bolt pattern and spline count on it. I don't know what is stock about any of it. I just read that Dana was not stock on any of those GM or Chevy trucks.. I hadn't thought about the shifter, my shifter is on the tail of the 465, which might be called a adapter, not sure. It's got the mount, not the tranny. I'm also thinking about making the NV4500 into two wheel drive if thats a lot easier than dealing with the T case swap.
Square root, I don't get how a Dodge T case with a tail swap would fix the issue of the T case clocking into the floor. There are plenty of GM/Chevy T C's around that don't need a tail swap anyway.
BTW, in this discussion is there any difference between GM And Chevy? I never know which to use. The truck is a Chevy but all the parts are GM, is my thinking.
Thanks again

Thanks, I don't know the bolt pattern until I pull it which will be in a few weeks. If there's no boss, I don't see how I can make it work though. I don't think I'd want to risk weakening the case by welding on it, but am open to other opinions

How does the twin stick work? one for 2WD and one for 4WD ? How can your factory shifter have a new floor mount with two sticks? Seems not compatible.

Thanks, I should call AA and ask about the 205 adapter having the bolt holes for my shifter. The guy I talked to didn't mention a shifter but if his adapter acommodates my shifter maybe I should bite the bullet and get their adapter. And I'll ask him about his flywheel fitting my input bearing

A chevy 4x4 NV4500 will be the standard 6 bolt pattern with a 32 spline shaft. The AA 205 adapter will give you the mounting point for the 205 shifter and will give you everything you need to bolt it up to the NV4500. It will need you to machine the pocket in the 205 for the larger input bearing though, since the NP205 that originally mounted to a 465 and TH350 had a smaller input shaft bearing.

ORD sells all the parts and can also do the machining. https://www.offroaddesign.com/labor-to-machine-np205-case-for-90mm-input-bearing.html

I think what he is saying is that the Dodge NV4500 uses the same 6 bolt pattern, but it is not clocked the same as the Chevy pattern, and therefore a chevy T-case would be clocked into the floor.

Thanks, I guess I don't know what clocking is. is it the way the two pieces mate up rotation wise?
