Check first to see if there's 12v on the feed (the ringed wire). After establishing that check the signal wire on the plug for 12v. If the alternator is good it should charge.
Also, you can use a fused jumper from the battery to the ringed feed.

You need three wires at the alternator A large wire that feeds power to the battery. An exciter wire which is keyed on,and a voltage sensing wire which tells the alternator, the battery is low it's time to charge. At the alternator pull the plug terminal 2 should have battery voltage to it,(voltage sensing wire) check it with a homemade test light, use an old headlight and some wires. 1 wire to ground 1 wire to terminal 2 socket at the connector. Same with the large wire at the alternator ( battery charging wire) same test, see if will light an old headlight. Terminal 1 (exciter wire) use a regular test light or volt meter, check for 12v with the key in the run position. If one of those is missing that's your problem. The reason you are using a headlight as a test light is those 2 circuits need to be able to carry some amperage, they might light a small test light or volt meter, but not be able to carry any real current.
