just picked this rusty girl up for free. nice little halfton only missing the outer rocker and drivers floor. other than that its very very solid.
anywho the reason im here is twofold, one it drinks a gallon of fuel idling in about 2 minutes which is insane and tells me theres something wrong with the carb or fuel system (not sure which since it came with 12 single barrel carbs in various states of rot.) the v8 pump installed is wrong and doesnt pull fuel more than about 3 feet behind it not sure about the pressure
2nd problem is i cant find the right rebuild kit or even a properly fitting air filter, ive seen more monojets without filters than with them at this point (i do have a weird bulky one barrel that fits a normal style v8 filter. i was debating on using my spare fiero air cleaner for the truck but it needs to run first)
any guides on rebuilding a monojet properly or where to find a kit that fits one
i do have an eventual plan for this truck that involves a 4wd suburban i picked up for free and im debating on keeping the i6 with the overdrive automatic or not.

did some work on the truck and realized the frame is just wrong. it looks like the suburbans frame which is a 3/4... but this has 1/2 ton springs and hubs so i think this is a hodge podge of a few different years of squarebody. the main ones being a rolled 84s drivetrain and frame and a 77s body and a early dual tank short bed

I got a rebuild kit for the monojet on my dad’s ‘76 250 I6 at Napa. They had it in stock.

You might want to reach out to Tom at www.12bolt.com and see if he has a good carburetor in his stash.

And I would recommend against running the engine until you fix that fuel issue as it is fuel washing the inside of the engine and most likely filling the crankcase with fuel, which is bad.

If these flood, they will kill the engine and fuel will overflow the carburetor. Have you checked to see if fuel is going into the crankcase?
0 fuel in the crank case. which i thought was weird but i have ordered a different carburetor since this monojet was rusted out internally. i grabbed probably the worst carb i could think of which is a carter yf. should run fairly decent i hope.
i do have a model b carb that was in the glovebox and is basically brand new. and doesnt fit because its the small bolt pattern

i had it running to make sure the engine wasnt junk and that was about it because it ran through the temp fuel jug very quickly and still wouldnt pull from the original gas tank. still working on making the quadrajet electric pump work for that since 3 psi should be fine

How are you measuring this fuel consumption? I think something is off with your numbers. It has to get enough air to burn a gallon of fuel in 2 minutes or it will stall. Have you checked compression, and vacuum?

see measuring it is the easy part. it went through a 3/4s of the way full 2 gallon costco milk jug that was full of fuel without any making it to the ground but sure as heck was being burnt by the engine. looked like a diesel running for the time it took to know the engine and transmission were functioning properly and the carb was completely junk.
it had stalled twice during that and i hadnt looked under hood before seeing that empty jug after the 3rd stall that i realized that yeah maybe it needs more than a rebuild kit.
the carburetor has rusted out into the intske through the bottom and crumbled into chunks when i dropped it on my floor. sitting for 20 years with salt and 8 feet of snow on it every winter did it 0 favours.
engine runs perfect with a borrowed and adapted 2 barrel off of my 50s international

it runs like garbage still. tells me maybe i should look into the hei a little bit.
still no gas in the carb which is good since its not flooding but at the same time thats not right either. im guessing my v8 fuel pump isnt working so i definitely need the electric one

I'm gonna do you and this truck a favor. I'm all about learning and doing things cheap, but a newbie just blowin cash and hackin stuff is not good for anyone or the truck. Take some real time to learn how these systems work and how to test them.

Most people end up putting themselves in a hole financially and messing multiple systems up, while trying to fix a problem, then after they're fed up the truck gets junked in some way or another.

Test your fuel pump. Take the line off see how much gas comes out. These trucks are stupid simple if you know basic vehicle theories.

Are you sure it's hei? Not points? What's the timing at? Need more testing less parts cannon.

to be fair to me this isnt my first ****** truck much less my first i6. i know the v8 fuel pump on a 250 is wrong and causing most of my issues. I have a proper fuel pump on order but im anal and ordered one custom for a 50s truck with a alcohol diaphram which is gonna be awhile before it arrives.
it is an hei from an 80s truck based on the fact its a hei distributor almost exactly identical to my 94 454 rv. timing is at 10 degrees btdc.
the only "parts cannon" was a used carter yf since the original rochester rotted the bowl out internally and this was 5 whole dollars with a 15 dollar rebuild kit.
i bought it with these problems to save it from being scrapped since a tree was already sitting on the bed and was in his way. sitting for 15 years did this truck no favours and im trying to get it functional or to a point where the i6 is clearly the only problem and i throw a 350 into it that i already have for my s10 swap
