Modern brakes on my 84

Ok so I have a bad habit... Thinking outside the box when it comes to builds. I am going to put a 00-03 suspension and 4 wheel disc brake system on my 84... Anyone ever tried it; successful or otherwise? Any and all info tips or knowledge would be appreciated

Getting that independent front suspension mounted and aligned might be a challenge, are You uptoit ???

Mounting torsion bars will be the biggest challenge, if it is four wheel drive.
If it is four wheel drive, then the transfer case needs to drop the front drive shaft out to the left side.

Both will be 2wd which I believe the newer have coil springs and on the 4x4 it has torsion bars but mine is 2wd so that shouldn't be too bad

they must have offered both, or are GMC vs. Chevy thing. cause all i have looked at is chevys in the junkyard. but i have also looked at aftermarket suspension systems and they are refer to coil springs, except pro comp refers to both in 2 wd, i will call a chevy/GMC dealer today to confirm that theory. regardless i am still going through with it..hey what is a project without a little cutting,welding, and drilling? i will post my findings and pictures. plus i will take lots of pics for a build thread...

Well called the dealership and the theory is correct, 2wd trucks had either torsion or coil springs depending on the suspension package... So everyone is right lol

Yeah I've see both and never could figure out the determining factor. Seems like most of the 2wds with torsion bars are Avalanches though.

Curious here... why are you thinking of doing this swap? I am not saying its stupid or anything like that, just curious.

edit: DUUH! After reading the thread title I realized it was about brakes. You are doing this whole suspension swap just to get the brakes??

When doing a rear disc brake swap, you have to generally install a manual proportion valve, because you are putting a different flow, pressure blah blah blah. Well the setup I am doing I am taking everything... Brake lines booster M cyl. Axle etc and mounting it on mine. Also 6 lug rims are becoming very popular and the market is flooded with wheels to everyone's liking. Also there is the cleanliness of the modern brake look, you have hub assemblies with sealed bearing. And if you find wheels that you like that don't have center caps, you no longer have dust caps staring at you in the face. Also there is the stopping power, I had a 01 chevy all wheel disc brakes with a 4.10 rear that was modded out. It stopped a heck of a lot better than my 84 ever has, and with the motor and tranny I am installing in the 84 I will need the stopping power.
