Melting fusible links at starter and junction box

Ok so I have this 78 c25 that I got a hell of a deal on
The dude parked it because it died on him and never bothered to work on it ..
When I hooked the battery up I noticed smoke coming from the fusable link on the junction box ..
And today I noticed the link by the starter was melted .. I rebuilt the wire on the starter as well as the wire on the junction box and again it melted ..
I traced all the wires and can not find any bare wires or bad grounds

Not to insult, but I had a friend that hooked his battery up backwards one time and did similar damage.

was it smoking without you turning the key. So pre ignition resistance

Had exactly the same problem when I hooked the battery up backwards. Link at the firewall junction burned up first. Leave to GM to make the original battery cables both the same color (black).

The negative post on the battery ALWAYS goes toward the fender (it's a safety issue). There's your ground.
The positive goes toward the engine, thus to the starter wire.
If you can't tell which wire goes to the starter and which one goes to ground, that's another issue.
