I’ve lurked in the background for a number years, gaining some great knowledge to build my 1986 GMC Suburban,that has a 6.5 diesel installed when I bought it. No clue the number of miles on this motor, bought it in UT and drove it back to CO no trouble. I then started to changing a few thing, rear diff needed to be replace, so replaced and added ARB Airlocker. It didn’t stop there, swapped in a NV4500 and a NP208, gathered all the parts, nutted out the finer details, drive shaft length etc. Had help from a local 4WD mechanic (only issue there was most of experience is with Jeeps) All he really did was provide the hoist and another pair of hands.
I got the bug! Next was a lift with ORD provided the kit, took a couple of months, because did it on weekends and when weather permitted as I had no garage/workshop. I also bought 15” rims for the new Cooper Discovery tires.
I’ve done some rust repair but there is way more to do!
Unfortunately I had to put the “Beast of Bourbon” in storage in 2016 and head back to Australia to care for my Mum, she’ll be 98 in a couple of months.
When I head back to Colorado next year, I want to tackle the diff gear ratio. I found that BB NO longer could tackle the mountain very well, loss of power, probably due to tire size and lack of a turbo.
I will be doing a bit brain draining posts to figure out the best configuration.
I love my “Beast of Bourbon” ultimately i’d Like to drive it down to Central America.

Depending on the year of the heads, may be as simple as add a turbo from a turbo 6.5(and related stuff) to your 6.5.

If I could offer you some advice on your trip, having been to all those countries except Mexico, the ones I would stop and take the time to explore more thoroughly are Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama. Honduras is on the fence for me, but I’d definitely be leery of Mexico, especially in the border provinces, Guatemala, and El Salvador. These are generally pretty dangerous places. Best of wishes to your mum. My great grandmother is turning 99 in a few weeks.
