I considered an LS but the cost of the peripherals killed it (controllers, harnesses, etc). I went with a 97 350 because I wanted a roller cam. Added Edelbrock e-tec heads, ProFlo4 FI, an Edelbrock roller cam and a complete rebuild. I have about $4200 total in it....but everything is new and warrantied. I'll live.

if your crafty and don't care what it looks like, and don't buy this and that NEW, and just slap it in as is, you can do it yourself under $2k.....and I'd expect that to be an engine/trans combo. 4x4 will add a bit but not much.

I would use the 4L60 trans. It's compatible with the engine you want since it's a computer trans like the engine. Don't keep the 700r, sell it and put the money towards the 4L60. This is a real common swap these days. You should be able to find all kinds of people who could help you do it yourself. It'd be fun and educational.

I would have to check the final total but we did this 85 at my shop for less than 6k I think. We sourced an pulled the donor drivetrain (wrecked 02 suburban) pulled the old drivetrain etc. He drove it in with a 305/th350 an drove it home with the 5.3/4l60. Goal was a clean stock looking swap. It's coming back soon for a vintage air install.
