I honestly figured by now they're all scrapped. I don't know of any transmission shop that ever rebuilt them. They just converted to Th350 and threw them in the scrap pile.

I had read somewhere that these transmissions were so bad when they were new cars and went back to the dealer for warranty/service work that the dealers would replace them with th350s

Just for those watching, Sometimes in discussion people will confuse a Th200/Th200C for a 200-4R because they are not aware that Th200/Th200C exist so they think we're talking about a 200-4R. They are 2 totally separate transmissions. Th200 is a 3 speed auto with the same length and output spline count as a short shaft Th350. 200-4R is a 4 speed overdrive unit and comes in Multi-Bell Bell Housing pattern so it fits BOP, Cadillac and Chevrolet engines. It's also a weak transmission but can be built tougher. Art Carr would build them for lighter bodied cars for drag racing.

Quite possibly so. GM was known to do that kind of thing. Many of our squares, especially the 82-84 models that came factory with 700r4's, GM would convert some of them to Th350's also if the customer was willing to allow it.

I worked at an independent transmission shop from 1984 thru 1990, we wouldn't even use a pre 1986 700r4 core to rebuild because of all the issues from 82-85, and almost never built TH200's ever!

Yep, the 82-84 were the worst of the worst with the smaller input shafts, and the 85 and 86 weren't much better.

What I think that I am hearing is that my original, early 700R4 (built '83) behind my LG4 in my '84 Caprice with 275K miles is worth A LOT to the right person :laughing1:
