Ok, Just got a call from a friend that was asked by a good friend of his if they would be interested in a 2005 Z71 4x4 extended cab. He called me and told me the details as this sounds like a good deal. I am now waiting to see pics. and potentially set up a test drive. It is not posted anywhere yet. The seller is looking to sell because he does not use it often and wants something smaller. So far I know that AC is out and I have been told it just needs a charge. Only one speaker works, meh.

Can anyone give me some insight to this type of Cat Eye rig? Details, pros and cons from your experiences with these trucks... pictures to follow. I have one that was texted but I cannot seem to load it on the forum like normal. Typical pewter metallic color from the 2000's.

My opinion is the it's Chevy's WORST body design EVER! The front clip looks cheap & chinsey to me, but the drive trains seem to hold up well. I owned a '99 1500 w/5.3 and really liked it though. I also bought an '07 HD Crew w/6.0 gasser new, and that was one of the best trucks I ever owned. My mechanic buddy bought it from me & still ownes it. If you like it & it's a good deal, who cares what others think, right??

What is it you are wanting from the truck? Daily driver? Resto? Currently the market for OBS and both small and full size GM trucks thru the early 2000s is rising. Much of it is from buyers wanting something reliable that they can still work on themselves.

@TotalyHucked dailys one of these. Hopefully he can help you with real world daily expierience on it.
Oh yeah, I have been following Huks thread on his 2005 daily. I really admire seeing all the thorough work he does on his square and his cat eye. Both cool trucks.

All you just mentioned. I want to drive a truck daily. I love my square but want to keep it running as long as possible and practicality of daily driving it is not real for me. When I drive it though I definitely tend to want to keep driving it the next day, and the next day, and so on. If I get this truck or a truck like this one I will daily drive and modify as much as possible. Currently daily driving my CRV and it is very reliable but I got the itch, trucks are very useful often, and I love Chevy trucks.

I recall during the early 80s when the redesigned models came out and the round eye squarebody was considered antiquated. I also remember my uncle talking about how ugly the 68 GMC grills were compared to the Chevy. I think one thing that most of us can agree on, the OBS and early 2000s GM trucks have reached the end of the curve on depreciation. Buy a cat eye for the typical price and you won't ever lose money on it.

Depending on price/miles/condition, but that would be a great driver. I'll give ya a quick run down after I get back from an errand with the boss, NBS trucks were my first love before squares came around. I've owned 8 of this generation truck lol

I believe the 2005 was the last year or next to last year that did NOT come with DOD. I'd drive the hell out of that truck. Powertrains go forever. Even if the frame rots out, the drivetrain would be great for a swap.

The problem area with these trucks are the front wheel bearings, the front cover seal, the head gaskets if it's an iron block with aluminum heads, and the knock sensors. The bearings can go out with no warning, sometimes they will clunk when making a tight turn. The seals on the timing cover will burn up on the 4x4's due to heat. This is on the iron blocks mostly. They like to leak water into the cylinders again on the iron block. The knock sensors will get rusty under the manifold and fail. They can be a bit--h to get out. All in all, they are good trucks. I have a 04 2500 with the 6.0. It had 160K before I ran into problems. I spent a lot of money to make it a 408 and it spun a cam bearing, I think. It lost oil pressure. When I drained the oil, it came out like metal flakes. The bottom end didn't knock, but the lifters started to squeal. Thats why I think it's a cam bearing. The trannies are good for about 180K before failing. It is sitting awaiting an engine rebuild.

Miles, maintenance history, what repairs have been done that won’t need to be done again soon and condition are the best ways to judge it. Above what “kind” of vehicle it is. Same goes for any 20 year old used car.
That said, I believe in general the early gmt800s are very reliable overall. Have had a couple of them for commuter beaters in recent years. Both lower mileage ones. But the number of them you see with 250k miles and original engine is telltale of a good car.
Common Issues? Gauge cluster craps out. Transmissions are good but not good for more than 100-150k on avg if maintained.
Otherwise they’re solid IMO. Any old car is going to have a crap stereo. Hell, the 60k mile Camaro we bought last year has blown speakers.
I’d take a 2000s LS over a 2000s triton or hemi apples to apples.

I have a 04 z71 extended cab, Had it since 07 and it had 36k miles on it when i bought it, 175k now. Wheel bearings went out around 100k. I had to replace the transfer case at 150k (my fault for not servicing it regularly and it ran dry). If its a 4 button transfer case, those where pretty pricey when I had to find one. 05 should have all the serviceability back (04 GM tested some silly stuff on filters and such) I had to do spark plugs and wires at 158k... wire boot had cracked and was getting a misfire. Both rear wheel calipers seized up on mine around 120k. If it has dual climate control on the AC then the servo motors for those are a PITA to get to and change. Mine has been very dependable.

So that being an '05 ECSB Z71, it could be an L33 truck. Get a picture of the RPO sheet if you can. L33 was the Hi-Po 5.3 with an aluminum block, flat top pistons, 799 heads and hotter camshaft. Made like 315hp instead of the regular LM7's 295hp.

What's been mentioned above is mainly just maintenance stuff that can/will happen with any car. Wheel bearings don't go out any sooner than anything else (my current truck has 187k on it and the entire front end is 100% original). Engine gaskets are also considered a maintenance thing at this age. Every seal/gasket under my truck needs to be replaced at this point but I expected that/knew it when I bought it. Engine is coming out for a reseal soon, trans was rebuild just before I bought it, T-case needs a reseal and axles are getting done now.

Gauge cluster stepper motors like to go out, so if the oil pressure gauge is pegged or moving around erratically, fuel gauge doesn't read, speedo is stuck in a spot, etc, get the gauge cluster rebuilt. That runs ~$175 here for a basic rebuild, there's also guys online that can customize them any way you like. Steering wheel buttons died/stop lighting up. Can find them online easily.

Transmissions are the same as other maintenance items, just expect a rebuild at some point. That will have the 4L65E in it, which is slightly stronger/upgraded from the 4L60E. Depending on mileage, it's likely been rebuilt already or will need to be at some point in the future. They're perfectly fine behind a stock 5.3, don't buy into the "60E's are junk transmissions" online BS.

Rear axle is a 8.6 10-bolt, basically an evolution of what's in your square. Plenty durable for a half ton truck.

Front axle is an AAM 8.25 IFS differential. You'll likely have 3.42 gears (GU6 code - the base, most common gear in '05-up Z71s) but 3.73 (GT4) or 4.10 (GT5) was optional. If it's a bench seat truck, it could have either the push button 4wd on the dash or the manual lever in the floor. If it's a factory bucket/console truck (easy way to tell is if it has arm rests, that's factory. If it doesn't have arm rests, the console was added), it'll have push button 4wd. The push button will have an Auto4wd option, don't use this. Ever. It's really hard on the transfer case and bearings. Just use 4hi/4low as needed (same as your square, only in slippery/offroad conditions).

Bose was an option and is a pretty darn good sound system for a stock setup. Mine works perfectly fine, even at 20 years old. There's a tiny little 5.5" sub in the console, tweeters on the a-pillars, 6.5" round speakers in the front doors and 4x6"s in the rear doors.

The transfer cases are known to have "pump rub" in higher mileage trucks. If it gets bad enough, it'll rub through the case and you'll lose all your fluid/burn up the T-case. Same as a trans, eventually it'll need a rebuild and a "pump rub kit" is a good thing to throw in while you're at it. Not a hard job.

Another maintenance thing, check the u-joints. These have big aluminum driveshafts (5in diameter IIRC), you don't want that getting slung out.

Extended cabs tend to not seal as well as crewcabs at this age. My last one needed all the door seals and door pins/bushings. All the seals are available from Precision (about $600 for all of them) and the pins/bushings are available from several different places. Make sure to check the rear door hinges closely. If they don't shut well/are badly misaligned/are tearing out of the door, new hinges are like $175 A PIECE! I just recently found this out.

But realistically, what these do need at 20yrs old/200k+ miles is simple and cheap compared to most other vehicles. These are the most comfortable/reliable vehicles GM ever made IMO, there's a reason so many are still on the road and why I keep coming back to them. I'll never be without one from here forward

oh yeah and the jamb door handle to open the rear door snapped right off when opening the door a while back... was easier and cheaper, than expected to fix. Mine has the Bose radio system.... its in the process of giving up... the amp for those are under the center console, I need to dig into that one day as well. Mine has the 3.73 rear.
