Im curious, how can you tell if its an integrated head and when was the change and also wich were better?

The intake is actually part of the head. No option for better intakes, headers, bigger carbs. The 292 was used in Chevy’s bigger trucks along with light pickup trucks.

Best truck I ever owned was a '77 K20 with 292/SM465/205 with 4.56 gears. Pulled like a 'dozer and got terrific gas mileage. Just don't pull out into traffic unless you've got LOTS of room to get up to speed!

The 292 had only about 20 lb. ft. of torque less at the "bottom end torque range" than the 454 in the same year and was way lighter!

Change was in the early 80s, I think. Valve cover has two chambers on the top for something called PAIR -- Pulsed Air Injection Reaction (or reactor) that was used instead of an air pump.

So what head would a 73' 250 be? It has the single valve cover...

I think it was a little earlier. My '79 250 was a used replacement from what I remember. It was non-integral, but I remember going to the parts store for a valve cover gasket and I had to get one for an earlier year. So my '79 was likely an integral head originally.

ran one in my 83 c10 4x4.4spd 373 grs.that thing would pull houses down,with a fully loaded bed!! and ask for more! I also built one with a blue racer cam,4bbl carb,split exaust,and ported head...awesome!!! order leo Santucci book on building 292 six bangers, you will learn ALOT!
