Lifting a SBC

******* question of the day:

I am getting ready to set my motor and trans into the frame (going to assemble them together before setting them in place). I have no intake yet - going FI.

Where do you fellas put the bolts (or eyes) to lift these things? No intake, aluminum heads. No accessories or brackets either. Looked like most external holes are around 3/8" (?!).....cant see them holding that much weight. Dunno.

Local hardware has the forged eye-hooks. I ordered several of those years ago from McMaster-Carr in metric for 4N cars. Always worked really well.

I was thinking that same thing but, this works great and had no problems with it. Got the chain off Amazon for cheap that holds 1000 pounds.

Are there holes in the back of the heads also? Cant remember now.

We just used the exhaust bolts Sunday to lift a SBC and Turbo 400 combo into the bed of our truck.
Easy Peasy.

When we got here to the house, our chain was shorter and Junior used the intake bolts as you can see here...

3/8" bolts will more than handle the weight. Do whatever you have to.

When I dropped my 350/th350/NP203 setup in the frame on my K20, I just used 2 ratchet straps wrapped under the engine, and under the trans adapter. Rolled the truck under it.

When I dropped my 350/th350/NP203 setup in the frame on my K20, I just used 2 ratchet straps wrapped under the engine, and under the trans adapter. Rolled the truck under it.

So... how did you release the ratchet straps slowly and under control?

So... how did you release the ratchet straps slowly and under control?

No, had the straps hooked to my engine hoist. I just lowered that down carefully until it was in place and on its cradles, then released the straps.
Plan on doing the same thing for the engine coming out of my truck this weekend.
The straps are rated at 600lbs. I had 2 of them, each with 2 ends going up to the hoist. So that's 4 pieces of strap totaling 2400lbs, hanging on a hoist rated for 4k lbs on the peg I had the bar at. Very safe.
The wrap around everything nicely, they dont dent or scratch stuff like chains, they dont get in the way, you can leave them in until your all done and bolted in. Win win.
I think I had mine running between the exhaust manifold and the block (cant do that with a chain), that way it holds the block better with less odd pressures, and it cant slip off, because you have it between exhaust port 1 and 3, and 2 and 4.

Also used ratchet straps to take the body off my jeep.
I set up a couple sections of scaffold around it, with a pipe going between.
Used the straps a couple clicks at a time to lift the whole thing up. When you ran out of room on the ratchet, you'd get another set to replace it.
Then used the hoist to hold up tge back side as I rolled out the frame from underneath. Worked well.
Then used the same straps to take the engine, trans, and transfer out of that frame, hahs
I use straps for everything.
I had to figure something smart, because I'm always working by myself.

Man! I was looking at your pictures and realized, "Look at all that open space!!" I'm not saying anything offensive, but you appear to live out in the middle of nowhere. How much of all that space is yours? What a place to build! I'll guarantee you, you could see them coming from way off! Do you hunt coyotes where you are? Or are you so far out there aren't any, you're to far out of the way. lol

Well thank you. Yeah, I kinda am in the middle of nowhere. My nearest neighbor is about a mile away, and it's about 20 miles to town. Pretty much everything you can see around, I own 70 acres. I have all my projects on a one acre lot that's fenced off from the rest of it, to keep the horses away from my stuff.
Nope, don't hunt coyotes, but I see them all the time. They're pretty much harmless, they dont like to come near the house, but at night you can hear them crying.
I like being away from everybody. Have plenty of room to keep collecting junk, lol.

After reading this post last week, I used the ratshit strap method to lift a couple of small blocks out of the junkyard. They no longer lend out the engine hoists on the weekends.
So we went brute strength and came out victorious.
