Let it ride or new axle shafts?

Ford 9”, Dodge stuff and pre 65 GM and BOP had a bearing pressed on the axle. Any Chevy 8.2,7.5,7.6,8.5,8.6 and 12 bolt car and truck have axle to roller bearing direct contact with the bearing being pressed into the housing.

That makes me feel old cuz I recall more of the pressed on the axle full bearing. Though I do remember a few of this type bearing in GM cars but I do remember now most of the truck axles I worked on were 3/4 and 1 ton with full floaters. Car axles were back in the street racing days and many were converted to Ford 9in, a few Dodge 8 3/4in, Dana 60's in the Full Size Dodge cars and the 12 Bolt Chevy axles were in 64-67 Malibu's and El Caminos and they weren't the stock rear ends other than the one 65 Malibu SS so who knows what they came out of but they were pressed on the axles too IIRC. Damn, been alot longer than I realize. The fun days when working on **** was still fun and not work.

Here you go, the top of the bearing is concerning. But that’s could have been done driving it on.

It looks like it got warm at the ends and may have spun in the housing.

Couldn’t be from driving the bearing on at an angle instead of straight on? Anyways I picked up some new bearing. Do I just coat it in some gear oil and send it?

Pretty much I usually pack them with grease though. If your using synthetic gear oil and you pack the bearings use synthetic grease and vice versa, don’t mix, because they won’t.

You may be on to something....would it hurt to start with a heavy grit and try to work that gouge out. Then finish up with 2K grit to smooth everything?

That’s just going to open the hole larger.

Does your truck have a bunch of HP? Might want to look into C- clip eliminators

The axles could be reworked, I had axles milled down at the area where the bearing sits to a smaller diameter, then the shop put on a hot sleeve (nearly glowing) and after hat machined it to the original diameter and hardened it. Was about 110$
Also the housing can be fixed with welding to add material and machining.
Maybe that's an option if you have a good machine shop around.
