On this topic, does anyone here know what the cause would be of a fixture that when you turn it on, you can hear the humming, but nothing happens? Its a 4 light fixture, with 2 magnetic ballasts, about 1970s from the labels. One magnetic ballast doesnt appear to hum, but im guessing each feeds 2 lights, although they are wired together (it appears to be just daisy chaining the source power on 2 wires)

Ive heard of "starters" on older fixtures , apparently they got rid of them at some point. like i said, id say the 70s is probably how old it is. Would that cause no light at all, but a functional ballast? Usually a bad ballast is no light no sound, or the lights make almost no light but they do weird light show stuff. Thats been my experience.

I am helpign someone fix theirs and since they have 2 tubes i figured if the one ballast is dead I would just fix it so far as making that work. But if the ballast could be the issue im not even going to waste any time i am going to straight up replace the bulbs and wire directly.

Since there is no diffuser and the wiring to the tombstones is very open ,im considering doing double ended power since id hate someone to attempt to put a glass tube in and have it explode

The unholy Trinity of fluorescents.
Tubes.
Ballasts
Starters.

If you don't have the little silver shotgun cylinders, which are ancient, then put a fresh set of tubes in the fixture .

If it doesn't fire up, do yourself a favor and just $#itcan the ballasts and rewire for 120VAC Bypass LEDs.
