AFAIK, HEI became standard in 1975 on square-bodies.

Yup. GM went with HEI (in the big cap version) across the board in '75. Some makes and models went to it in '74; the Cadillac engine that used to be in our '75 Burb has it. I know the engine is a '74 because the guy who built the Burb, used the prior year's Cadillac running gear in them, after he pulled the 454 and associated parts. He built a Burb like this for several years in the 70s, afaik they're all square body Burbs.

interesting I thought it not only came out in 74 but it was also for all gm products I think I even read it some where as well but do not remember where
