I just got my first squarebody, a 1979 Chevy 1500. Its in.. decent shape. Seller disclosed a coolant leak, and pointed out that it was coming from a crack where the lower hose (from radiator to engine) meets the engine. After overheating, parking, and letting it cool, I added a gallon of coolant - to watch it completely pour out from.. somewhere. It is not leaking from the crack from what I can tell. I will replace that hose - but if the overheating/leaking continues, I would be at a loss on where to even start.

Get some leak dye for your radiator and a UV light. Autozone sells it.

coming from that area there are a few possibilities

lower hose if that's leaking it should be obvious.
water pump use a mirror to view the underside of the water pump. there is a weep hole under the pulley if coolant leaking there the pump is bad'
other possibilities would include a freeze plug head gasket or intake manifold.

my moneys on the water pump

I thought you meant because there was no 79' 1500....
Is true. Much like when people have an 89 c10.
I tend to let them go for those mishaps. Besides ..... he’s (she’s) still new
