I've got a 1977 Chevrolet C30 that I'm putting a motor in. My original motor that came in truck was an 82 however when starting to rebuild my machinist said it was a no go due to crack near start bolt. He sold me what was supposedly a 92 block that had been converted to roller lifters. I'm a noob to 454s so I'm just going off what he told me.
Got that block back from him and went ahead and started assembling crank, rods, etc. I started noticing issues when install timing chain that it wouldn't fit. I started to do research on casting numbers and figured out this block was manufactured February 12 1999. It made sense why my block didn't look anything like others that had been "converted to roller lifters" like my machinist said.
So got the right timing chain kit installed as well as the right timing cover with the crank sensor delete but I've hit a snag. I've realized these come with a crank reluctor ring that helps with spacing when installing harmonic balancer. I've read that I can use a different harmonic balancer to bypass that reluctor ring but which one. Would a 92 balancer work? It would sit flush against crank timing gear.

You should just need a pre-SFI (no reluctor used in those years) balancer. Through '95 should work.

That's what I was thinking. I've got a 92 454 harmonic balancer and was going to press that on and see what clearance I get.
