Is 28"x17"x1.25" radiator OK for mild 350?

I'm replacing a 250 six in my 82 C10 SWB with a mild 350. My current radiator has a core size of 28"x17"x1.25", and is probably the original. Amazingly, it doesn't leak, but it has massively dented fins, no heater hose port, and no trans fluid cooler.

In order to escape the hassle of finding the correct brackets and pads, I'm considering buying a stock replacement that's the same core size. Some catalogs show that size radiator was used on all sixes and 305-350. Do you think I'd be OK using it? I plan to use an 18" 6-blade clutch fan, and will try to find a shroud that fits. The truck will probably never carry more than 1000 lbs, including passengers.

That's the same dimension factory radiator that's in my truck. No heater hoses run to it either. Only difference is my tranny is cooled thru the radiator. And I have an electric instead of a mechanical fan. I have had no issues keeping my 383 with a 671 cooled (the roots adds a lot more heat). You will be fine with your setup.

You used to be able to have your old copper radiators rebuilt ? I would prefer that over a new aluminum one.

Back in the day, yeah. There used to be 3 places that I knew of in Flint that were capable of doing it. Can't think of a single one anymore. Maybe someplace that specializes in antique show cars.

Cost to refurb a radiator is twice the cost of a new one. The aluminum radiators with plastic ends are just fine and last plenty long.

Up until a couple years ago there was a radiator shop in Nevada MO that would rebuild the old ones. He still has all the stuff, but mainly works on semis now. Pisses me off every time I think about how disposable everything has become.

Mine would need a new core, and I'd bet that costs more than a new radiator. However, I will call my local shop Monday to find out.

I just had mine repaired last month. I almost went with an O'reilly radiator but opted to stay with the old copper and bass one. One of the tanks and a tube was seeping and several fins closed up from our giant grasshopper impacts. The leaks were soldered, the core rodded out, the fins combed out, and repainted for 65 bucks. Not too bad IMO.
