First off, I've been replacing the hydro-locked 305 in a 1985 C10 with a 400 from a 1975 Caprice Classic Convertible (maybe '76?). I'm in the process of cleaning all the external parts and will soon drop the new engine in. I was a lurker here for a while and figured I'd officially join.

I have a few questions...

First about site etiquette: let's say I have a question about swapping said 400 CID engine, so I proceed to the Engine Swaps child board under the Engine and Performance board. While discussing the swap, I have a question about removing 1985 emissions systems. Do I post a new thread in the main Engine and Performance board? And while discussing the vacuum systems, do I refer questions about the vacuum lines to the transmission to the "Automatic Transmission" or "Transfer Case" boards?

Second, how much time do folks here spend looking for existing threads as opposed to starting a new thread that asks the same stuff for the umpteenth time? And along with that, which boards tend to be the most monitored? There's nothing more frustrating than finding an existing thread that asks exactly what I need to know only to find that it's never been answered and the last post was years ago. (Maybe this was answered in a different thread? :D)

Finally, in my gusto to retrieve information from the "interwebs", sometimes I found myself here, and sometimes I found myself on 73-87chevytrucks.com. What are the distinctions (if any) between it and this site? Does one site seem to cater towards the professional crowd, racing community, or well-equipped-shop restoration enthusiasts (read:rich retired guys and not me)? I guess many Chevy Truck sites are better than few, but are there any nuanced differences that would be good to know as I move forward?

That's all I can think of now; I'm sure there will be more!

1) I don't think it would raise any issues to handle all of the swap related questions in the original thread from your example. Another option, however, would be to start a build thread for your truck, where all points of the build could be in one thread. All depends on how you want it all recorded.

2) seems to depend on if the poster has any experience on forums. On occasion, we get a few that drift in from Facebook, and begin machine gunning questions without looking around the second their account is set up. Continuing a subject in an existing thread tends to keep the duplicates down.

3) Differences are usually caused from how a forum is run, some people are simply a better fit on different boards in regards to personality.

@CSFJ seems to have done an excellent job of answering your questions.
If it's your build thread you can cover what if relevant to your build or your needs. It's your thread use it to your benefit.
If needed and you ask a duplicate question we can always merge into an existing thread. Not a big deal.
GMSB is the best forum......As CSFJ states above each forum will have it's pluses and minuses. Sometimes someone just prefers the "feel" of one forum over another. Just personal preference sometimes.

Welcome from the Black Hills of South Dakota.

Like Animal and CSFJ said concerning forums, it's just where you feel comfortable. I visit the others from time to time, but tend to hang out here the most.

Welcome. And thank you for asking those questions. And thanks to those who answered them. Now go and search to your heart's content, ask the questions you need to, make a build thread, and get that 400 installed in the truck so we can see your handy work.

Thanks everyone! I'll post some photos this weekend. For better or worse, I'll err on the side of asking too many questions than too few.

Welcome aboard.

I can tell you the biggest difference between GMSB and 73-87 is you’ll actually get your questions answered here. You won’t be catching the arrogance here either, just the advice you were looking for.

Oh...you can mention suppliers here and not get your post edited or deleted.

If you ask a question, just give it longer than 1 hour before freaking out that it hasn't been answered
