1984 chevy k10 305. Ok I put a new intake manifold on my truck.the first time It had a bad leak at the front but it started. Fixed the leak now it wont start. So I found top dead center on the compression stroke and pointed the distributor just before the number one spark plug. I'm getting spark I'm getting feel but it won't start up. I keep raising the distributor up and turning the rotor hoping to find the correct position. What am I doing wrong?

Find the timing mark and rotate the engine with a socket on the crank to 0 on the crank pulley

Then find the number one cylinder and trace the wire back to the distributor cap
And lift the cap and make sure the rotor is pointed to that wire

To get this right I had to buy a new cap and I cut a some windows in the side of old cap with a dremel so I could see where the rotor was

I just mark the distributor body with a sharpie, in line with the #1 terminal. When you pull the cap off, just line up the rotor to the sharpie mark.

That works if it’s the same engine

If you’re building an engine or swapping in a new dizzy
When you add TBI to a carbed engine I couldn’t get it right

Cutting out a circular window in the top of an old cap leaving the spark plug wire terminals made it really easy

Can oil leak from the intake manifold or would it more likely be the valve covers if I have oil on top of the motor?

it can leak in the front and back of the i take where it’s siliconed to the block or from valve cover gaskets. should be able to tell. i would guess it’s the valve covers but tough to tell without seeing it

I wasn't talking about making the mark before you take it apart. I'm saying install the cap, mark the distributor body where it lines up with #1 terminal on the cap, then remove the cap and rotate the dizzy until the rotor lines up with the mark on the dizzy body. Tighten the dizzy down and install the cap.

It's super easy and no hassle of cutting up a cap.

It's also possible for oil to wick up the threads of the center intake bolts, causing a little pool or two of oil on the manifold.

That sounds about right, because I just replaced the valve covers and gaskets.
