So then I had to work it all the way back down onto its mounts, decouple the hoist, pull the fans out and try again

So now it’s time to get it on the stand, throw the plugs back in, tape off the ports and pressure wash and de-gunk it. Then I’ll evaluate and see if I’m gonna actually throw the cam in or not. I saw one little spot on the rear lobe through the valley that kinda looked like spalling or something. Not sure, need to look at it closer

Then I’m gonna get in the bay and degrease/clean it up, re-loom the harness and throw in the Circle D converter

What kind nonsense is this? It's out, put the cam in it!?!?!?!!??!!!!!!!
Lol I probably will. I just thought I saw an iffy spot on the cam and had the thought of "well, I could just reseal this one and find another motor to go all the way through. And I could find a later 5.3 with flat tops/TBSS intake/799s and gain 100+hp"...but then I'd have to go through all this again.

saying a prayer over the exhaust manifold bolts yet? I've posted this before but I don't think I could change a LS cam and no do cam bearings. Seems to be a area prone to fail when cam swapping a well ran motor, at least from my reading it is.

I'm not really sweating those too bad. The rear two already have the heads busted off but have a good bit of the bolt left sticking out. I'll just zap them with some heat and tap them with a hammer before removing the rest.

For the cam bearings, me and my buddies have all swapped cams in several junkyard motors without doing the cam bearings and been successful but I'm kinda leaning toward doing a whole ring/bearing job this time and maybe upgrading to some flat top pistons for a compression bump since it's a pretty big bitch of a job to get it out of the truck.

Got the manifolds and heads off at lunch. 1 rear manifold bolt is broken off down in the head a bit, 1 is sticking out enough for me to grab. Then one of the front manifold bolts broke the head off when I hit it, but it's got plenty sticking out.

The heads look exactly as I expected, dirty but no issues

And the cylinders look great, nice cross hatch left, no ridge, no weird wear or scuffing. Just some carbon build up. How far I continue to go depends on how the cam looks when it comes out

So when does one of these make it’s way into the plot?

I've never really been interested in turbos until recently, I've always been a supercharger guy if there's boost involved. But I may seriously look at sticking a turbo on this truck sometime in the future. Free HP is awful tempting lol

Welp, got it torn down further after work. Squarebody shock stud works great for getting the balancer all the way off

Got the cam out. And I couldn’t help it, I looked at the cam bearings. Could see the difference in the top and bottom of the bearing from 5ft away. Bottom is smooth, top is rough. All the bearings I could see were like that. Crap.

Can see the 3, 4, 5 mains on the cam show some more wear than the others

So that’s where we stand as of now. Gotta figure out what rings and bearings to order. The original oil pan gasket is still there, rivets and all, so standard bearings ought to be fine I guess.

Found some flat top 4.8 pistons on RockAuto I’m debating to get some more compression. They’re GM and less than $300.

Or found a later 5.3 with 140k that has flat tops and the better 799 heads for $700 locally. If he’ll take $500 I may go that route, pull the rods/pistons and heads off to use in my motor and then just get new rings and bearings
