How'd you run your spark plug wires?

Hey guys,

Going headers and wanna see how ya all routed your spark plugs wires?

Under manifold/headers? Over headers, but below valve covers? Straight over valve covers?

I'd do with something like this. There are cheaper systems too in this style, but the aluminum one will keep the wires cool. Headers put off alot of heat and they will cook the carbon to your plug wires. The carbon becomes brittle then the first time you pull the plug wire to check a plug then you break the carbon core. They'll still transfer the spark through the carbon core but nonetheless, it's not as good. Kinda of like having broken pencil lead in a wooden pencil. You can also run insulating sleeves over the wires that helps too.

No offense but the concept is good but in order to truely work as intended it would have to be at least a half inch thick....I don't see it putting much pressure at the ends.seems gimmicky to me.

I have these and they work. They add just a little extra pressure to the valve covers at a point a bit wider than most of the spreaders. The very ends are always a problem on 4-bolt SBC valve covers.

The spark plug wires need to be routed a little unlike you would expect, though. The wires on the left side, from the outside in of the four-wire loom clip, are 5-7-3-1, and not 7-5-3-1, so that the wires loop to the plugs without touching the headers. Same on right side: 6-8-4-2.

I think you can see in the pictures how the 5 and 6 wires come off first and loop forward, while the 7 and 8 wires come off next and loop back. Doing it 7-5-3-1- and 8-6-4-2 makes it impossible to dress the wires so they don't touch the headers.

I got the Proform units above in black on chrome valve covers and they look pretty cool.

As for headers heating the wires, I used Taylor spiral metal wires. You don't need resistor wires if you use resistor plugs. Either-or.

Can't remember who makes these., but I love the way they work. Bought a universal set of wires and cut them to length.

These are Patriot H8048 headers with lots of clearance for plug wires and boots. Wires are cut-to-length MSD Street Fire. Looms on center bolt valve covers are from Made4You Products.

Here's another style of Made4You looms for perimeter bolt valve covers. Durable nylon clamps with stainless hardware. Very nice stuff.

BTW, as I recall, those are late 60s/early 70s Camaro headers on my 69 C10.

I don't have a pic, but mine are currently run haphazardly over the valvecovers and headers. They are also those horrible yellow accels, but they were on it when I bought it, so they'll have to hang out until I get to building a set.

Are those the stock wire separators? I just put some stock valve covers on with the flat brackets on top and am wondering what stock looked like.

If not, I guess whittling on universals would work

Yeah, those are stock only used them because they were there, gonna make some decent ones eventually.
