Build the back half of a ladder rack to match the width of the box originally. Build it as high as you want, mount it with bolts or fit it into your bed openings

For all the fooling around you're considering, you're still ahead imo to just build a simple flat deck.
If you can't get your welder up and running, check with a local tool rental place. They often have simple AC welders for rent. Get a correct rod
and 'relearn' what you did in school. You don't need need KaneKid welds.
All you need is the frame from steel and use planks for the deck.
All the work you're considering to save your rusted hulk will be in vain...
Valid opinion. Lots of this is still down the road planning, the engine is #1 atm but gives me a lot to consider

Looks bent up from being worked but seems pretty solid. This one of the beds converted to a trailer?

Yes. The frame upon which it sits is a frame where the one on my truck the bed came off. I believe it was an 84+, because it was blue and white with horizontal side marker and the tail lights had a later style sockets.

It was originally on my frame, replaced for rust and dings.
The bedsides are the worst.. I actualy have bedsides from a 77 that are also rusty but less overally mangled. But I would hate to take it and put it on my truck, it would see less good use sadly. And the one on my truck is... unlikely to do okay after its removed. maybe, i guess i cant know.
