Morning. Been reading the forum trying to answer the 1000 questions running through my head. I have gone down down so many rabbit holes, lol.
Living in Central Ohio and I have a question.

I have the opportunity to buy a 1978 GMC Jimmy, 4wd, auto. Has a locked up 350 in it now.

I was looking at replacement motors and once I factor in the fuel injection I want it seems like cost of $5k-$6 is where I am landing. This morning I realized I have a 2005 Silverado I have been trying to sell (Not really but kinda maybe trying) asking $6k but would take $5k. This truck has a 5.3L Jasper remain with like 50K on it.

How hard is it, and is it possible to just sway the motor, or motor/trans, from the 2005 to the 1978? I understand there would need to be adapter kits, wiring, etc, etc. I have access to basically al the tools, lifts, etc one would want in this situation. Just not sure if it is practical.

Any thoughts??

The way I'd do it is rebuild the original engine and leave it stock if it's in good condition. When I was younger, I would have modified it. Ultimately, it's your choice but you did sk for thoughts.

I wouldn't sell (or disable) your other truck until the 78 was done. You'll need it. I have tried this for 4 yrs now and it doesn't work.

I just despise carbs for the most part, lol. Had one in a '69 C10 and a '77 CJ7.

This will be a big project: front floor pans, complete color change, etc. If, and I am 99% sure I will, I will need it to be good for jump in and go trip to anywhere in the US so lots will be upgraded.
Also, and I will regret putting this here probably, I own a 10 bay Auto Repair shop in town so I "need" to have everything a perfect as possible.

So, as I said, I have the equipment and space to do the job properly just not sure if it makes sense. Worst case is I send the Orig motor to Jasper and have them rebuild it and put a Holley Sniper or something similar on it.

I currently have a 2016 Yukon, a 1992 Mustang GT vert, a 2007 Silverado, and a 2013 Subaru Forester. It is just me driving things so when I bought the Yukon in March of this year the decision was made to sell the '05 Silverado. Just haven't put a sign in it but I have plenty of vehicles. Very fortunate in that situation.

Beautiful jimmy!!!! Id rebuild or correctly replace the original 350! Even if its a good used craigslist 350. Thats what i did.

That looks like a real clean and original rig. Personally, I'd not venture too far off from stock.

Welcome! Nice Jimmy. My K5 kind of in same shape when I bought mine a few years ago. Guess it depends how much $$$ you plan on spending on your Jimmy. Less headache and more money in your pocket if you go back stock. Probably worth the same when you are finished?
