Trying to find the year of my small block. Just for parts ordering and what not. No other reason. I looked at the “lime book” referenced here but no luck. I ONLY have the numbers from the front pad behind the alternator. Previous owner said this was a replacement crate, but who knows.

Only number on the front pad is V0319800. Nothing else on the pad. Heads have the “regular “ valve covers with the four bolts around the perimeter.

I just cannot get the numbers off the back of the block

Thanks
Codfish

You dont have two numbers? Not a big deal because the V number should work

Engine ID Code Example: V0101CLJ- (V = Plant, 01 = Month, 01 = Day, CLJ = Engine Suffix Code)

IF You have the partial vin on your engine like shown, you can deduce the year because of that. If you only have the code you listed, then you need to see the rear of the engine

You must be registered for see images attach

it seems you have a crate

Thanks for the reply

Only those numbers. And the pad is a different Shape than your pic. More square than rectangular. Maybe 1 1/2” by 1” thick.

Any idea if the year can be determined from this number? That’s what I really need to know.

Gonna try to get the numbers from the back again.

no, as I said, in a normal sbc, you need to know the partial vin to know the year (assuming its the right application) and the code you have you could piece it together. but since its a crate, you dont have a partial vin. so you need to look at the back. What are you looking to do that you need to know about the block?

Well I “think” the casting number reads 14016379, late 70’s 350 with 2or 4 bolt mains.

Just wanted to know exactly what it is. May have to change the rear seal so hoping it was a 2 piece variety to avoid pulling the engine.

Thanks Auroragirl for your time.

Off to the chiropractor now . They could’ve put those numbers in a better spot.

About the tag riveted to the block, I can't find 4444 in a casting number, so it must mean something else. And I don't know what 20.01 means.

You need to find a way to read the casting number. For example, use a mirror and flashlight, or take a photo with a smart phone. Also, on some later model blocks like 10243880, the last 3 digits are on each side of the block, which can be seen from under the vehicle. Knowing the casting number will at least give you a range of years and tell you if it is one-or two-piece seal. Here's more info on where to find it: https://www.mortec.com/location.htm

And once you know it, this site will tell you more about the block: https://www.mortec.com/castnum.htm

Did you figure it out? I just bought a truck with the same number. The id pad is a different shape than what I’ve seen before. My guess is crate but would like to know more.

K25 VIN, but it's a 1 ton
Engine Size
350
Did anyone ever figure out the answer to the original question? I am in the same situation - casting number is 14016379 and stamping is just one sequence - V0319800. My cab VIN is of no use because other forum members have helped me figure out that my cab was replaced with a 1982 K25 cab and I have a C30 (RWD dually 1 ton) chassis. I was hoping the engine code would help me figure out the year of the engine and chassis. Some sources say this engine casting # is 1978-1985 and other sources say 1977-1979, which is correct? Any further clarification on an engine with stamping V0319800? And if it is a crate engine it doesn't help me figure out year of chassis. Any other suggestions on how to determine year of my chassis?

ASSUMING that crate engines followed the beginning part of the sequence. Im sorry to tell you but that 350 isnt originally out of a car or truck
It came off an assembly line, passed through a POS (point of sale) and then into your truck. nothing wrong with that but its not the original. There could be a possibility it was a warranty repair, but i am not able to speak with authority on that

Taylor, there sure has been a lot of discussions during the life of this old thread.. I'd like to add some information about the engine I.D. if codfish is still around.. The engine has been "professionally" remanufactured. The tag that's riveted to his block was put there when the engine went through a reman/rebuild process. The engine is probably not original to his truck. "GM 4444" is probably the part number applied by the rebuilder. "20.01. (85 or 95)" is the date it was placed into inventory, January 20, 1985 or 1995.. ".030" is the over size bore.. ".001 .001" probably indicates the crank main and rod journal sizes.
