OK, I have read all the forums and wiring diagrams, and just need confirmation.

The only wire I need for the HEI is a wire from the run circuit in the ignition switch.

This wire is used for both starting and running.

I know the second terminal on the HEI is for the Tach.

Am I correct?

Yesir I believe you are. I only have the 12v battery wire to mine. I don't have a tach in mine yet.

Correct. I connected 12v to one of the IGN terminals on fuse box and the other is for tach.

My suggestion would be to go for the AC Delco remanufactured Delco-Remy distributor. It should with everything except the cap and rotor, and you can order all that from RockAuto. That one (88864775) is $98 plus a $50 core. There’s a 5% discount code on the preferred vendor section, but I would copy that part number and see if anyone else has it for cheaper. Personally, I would stay away from the cheap stuff because crappy HEI parts can go out like a light, and I don’t want to be looking for a place to pull over a 33 year old car in six lanes of rush hour traffic.

You do have 3 wires from the distributor itself that plug in the cap also. the 2 outer plugs are for +12V and Tach.

You must be registered for see images attach

I used one of the cheap units and it worked fine for my application. But I did end up selling the truck eventually.

They are worth it. Search the forums for "skip white". You'll see plenty of good reviews. Come with cap/rotor/coil for ~$50.

I had one in mine for a few years with no issues.

EDITED: forgot about the lifetime warranty. Don't know about that as I didn't have any issues.

If you go with a $50 no-name Chinese unit, then buy a spare and keep it in the truck. Or buy Proform or GM and be done with it.

I already have a spare distributor with wires and carb and fuel pump all in the tool box in the truck. I tend to be prepared.

Watch out for the newer ones, they're good but need a ESC module (electronic spark control) my truck has one, they made two different ones, external and internal coil, I know your looking for the internal coil one, but if it's for anything above maybe 83-84 it's probably going to be one of the ESC dizzy style ones, they can be configured to work but it's for like on yours or mine in years where they used a ESC module behind glove box, NB I have an 85 K10 with it also, I still use it though, it helps with the timing if the vacuum advance goes to far to quick it detects spark knock and vacuum pressure and it backs timing off by I think up to 15 degrees for a second while RPMs catch up or if knock sensor detects a spark knock, it seems to help a bit, but just figured it might be helpful if you didn't know that, but either can still work right.
