Friend of mine has owned a lawn mower repair yard and scrap yard for years. People would bring things in for repairs and want them covered because they sit outside. He has told me for years, the ones that sit all summer waiting on long term repairs are worse off if covered than those that just sit out. He is in Indiana so humidity is an issue but he says with a cover they never dry out and everything stays damp due to the trapped humidity and moisture from the rain. I am not a scientist just going by his first hand experience for the last 40 plus years.

I agree with you, but there's a big difference between tossing a plastic tarp from Harbor Freight over your lawnmower and using a quality car cover. The materials that car covers are made from these days are micro-porous, meaning they have the ability to breath while still protecting your vehicle from UV and contaminates. That being said, the majority of inexpensive covers imported from China are not made from quality fabric. They are mostly plastic-based and a snug fitting cover that doesn't breathe will do more damage than good.

Been a while since I thought about this thread. What I ended up doing was....nothing. She gets washed at least once a week, and some wax thrown on her as well. Maybe twice a month? So far, so good!

I was going to say, if it is only a temporary issue and you plan on moving or having access to a garage or whatever, just leave it out and wash it and wax it as needed.
