Anyone come across this on the rear drum brakes? The other side was just starting to do this. This is off the 85 C10 I'm working on.

Sure, have seen that. Brake shoes with rivets do that to a drum when they are past worn out. Sometimes drums are reused just like that, with new shoes. Not the best plan, but can happen.

I think I know the answer to my next question, but I'll ask anyway,

Can the 2.75" brake shoe drum be replaced with a 2" brake shoe drum. or will the backing plate have to be changed?

I ask this because I bought 2" brake pads and the wheel cylinders without taking it apart.

Yep, back when I was 21. Money was tight, couldn't afford the rear brakes, knew they were beyond worn. Hated even using the brakes, but only vehicle and had to work to earn the money to fix them. Had to back off the adjuster a lot before the drum would even think about sliding off.

Driving a pickup empty most of the time and the rears hardly get use, it is 90% stopping power on the front - especially with front disc brakes. I have seen many trucks with(what I assume) the original rear brakes at 70-90K mi.
