So my son recently put rear brake pads on his Hoe cuz it sounded like metal to metal. He did it, not me. He's not got alot of experience but he was able to get this done and didn't see anything that he needed to call me about.

So this was just like 2 months ago. He calls and tells me it smells like his rear brakes are burning metal. I told him don't drive it, catch brake fluid on fire and you no longer have a Hoe.

So he dropped it off to me at his lunch break and he took my ride.

So here's what I find. the inboard pad has dropped out of the saddle and the the only thing keeping it from dropping out completely is the pressure of the caliper piston.

So WTF? How is this? I thought maybe the axle lost the C clip and was coming out. Nope. Thought the rotor was chewed up to thin. Nope, still .5 mm into the safe zone. But look at that distance between the inboard pad and the rotor. Granted, that one is chewed up now, and it will be 1/2 in thicker, but then will barely hit the rotor, and as soon as it wears a hair, then it's going to drop down and get chewed up just like this one did. Anyone got a clue what's up here??? I've been stumped before, but not like this.

I have one other idea and I'm saving it to see if anyone makes the same suggestion.

Just gonna throw it out there. Can the inside ones be put on the outside? Might have to go to the other side to accomplish. I know its probably a stupid thought, but a thought no less. Not sure if the inside pads are the same thickness.

I started to say mismatched parts but a wild guess all he changed was the pads.

Believe it or not, the inboard and outboard pads are identical. Full set of 4 of the same pads.

I thought of stuck caliper, stuck pins that needed greased, collapsed hose, all that stuff. Then I seen the pad had fallen out of the saddle. I thought, the damn axle must be trying to come out of the housing that it lost a C Clip. I thought of all the obvious and to no avail on none of the above.

Problem is solved, I'll update with pics when I get back. I got it back together and my son needs it ASAP and I need to go see my handicapped buddy.

Interested to know the outcome. The rotors looked narrow to me.

I mic'ed the rotors. Spec was 22mm brand new, Discard at 18.5mm. They mic'ed out at 19.75ish mm. Do notice they are cross drilled and slotted rotors also.

I'll be back though. Watching Street Outlaws. Can't miss that.

So after it not being the obvious, stuck caliper, collapsed hose, stuck hardware I was stumped for a few minutes. Then I start paying attention to things like the distance between between the backing plate/dust shield and rotor which goes along with the huge distance between the inboard pad and the rotor. So now what? Axle lose a C-Clip and axle pulling away taking the hub away from the dust shield? Nope !!! It's all tight, no slop. No clean spot around the bearing where it had slipped out at all. Now I'm really stumped.

So now I'm thinking, Slotted Cross Drilled rotors are NOT OEM. Someone had to have changed rotors at one time or another. I just wonder if these are the wrong fukin rotors. If the rotor hat had a deeper offset, it would push the rotor itself more inboard and we could probably make this work. Go to O'Reilly web site and see there is 10in and 11in rotor available. But wait, this rotor is almost 13in in diameter.

Fugg it' I took the rotor off, took it up to O'Reilly with me and told them to pull both part #'s and let me compare. Rotor #1 looked to be the same spec as what I carried in. Open box #2. Ok, than this is making more sense. Deeper hat with a deeper offset and also a much thicker rotor. I want that one and might be back for a 2nd. So here is the results.

PERFECT !!!! Much better ehhh??? Damn thing has had the wrong rear rotors on it this whole time. So lucky noone was killed or a flash fire from overheated calipers/rotors and brake fluid burn the bitch to the ground. You should have seen all the blue and yellow metal and all the heat check on the pads. Checked the other side, sure enough ,same slotted cross drilled rotor.

Experience does pay off. AS I told my son, if you'd have let me help you with that last brake pad swap 2 months ago, I'd have caught this problem before it came to this. Hopefully he learned a lesson.

And even though it stumped the hell outta me, it didn't beat me. I still have a little bit left in the tank...... Maybe !!!

nice job! That's crazy. I never would have thought someone would put the wrong rotor on there! :whymewhyme: I have drilled and slotted rotors on my 07 and like them a lot but would NEVER put an incorrect rotor on. That's just stupid.

No doubt. My son has driven this thing for over a year with newborns and toddlers in it frequently. I'm just thankful he's learned a little from me. When you hear weird noises you don't just ignore them. They mean something like the last time he heard metal to metal and thought his front brakes were bad so he brought it over before he tore up his rotors and I told him, Naww, that's coming from the back. He changed the pads himself that time. Then this time it wasn't all that noisy but he could smell hot molting metal and walked around the truck and found that it was coming from the right rear wheel and then he called me.

Thanks, that's what it was too. Detective work. Fixing it wasn't ****. It was figuring it out that took the time. For a bit I was stumped and feeling a bit useless.

I was also even more happy to see his truck has real rotors on it now too instead of those Harley Davidson looking thin ass rotors.

Yeah, I'd be curious to know what those other rotors were SUPPOSED to go on!! Those looked pretty small in comparison once you got the correct ones and compared them.

They go on a 2000 - 2006 GMT800. When O'Reilly's pulled both part #'s, one was just like the one I took in there, but without the crossdrilled slots, the other was the one I took home with me and it fit.

I would say they have their part numbers wrong then because those cross drilled and slotted rotors should be identical in size as an OEM rotor. Obviously that wasn't the case lol

Yes, Both part #'s are good. Just that some models use 1, some models use the other. So whoever ordered these slotted crossdrilled rotors just ordered the wrong part # and installed them. I'm not surprised though. I remember the guy my son bought this thing from. He wasn't to sharp. It all makes sense now. But this Hoe been rolling on those wrong rotors for a few years.
