Oh & the 305 is running the Qjet. This may be rebuilt & used. Depending on a rebuilder or my time if I'm doing it.


There is a member on here that rebuilds qjets for a living.

Vortec heads, 9.4-1 compression, one piece rear seal, and a roller cam ! What's not to like ? :party36:

For $30 more you can buy the 4 bolt main version.

If you do change the cam in it - the HT383/350 Ramjet cam can be bought new or used for cheap, and will give it 350 HP.

Just add a performer vortec intake ( I bought mine for $60 + shipping - used )

One issue is that there is no provision for a mechanical fuel pump on that engine, so you need the electric fuel pump(s) in the tank(s), or some in-line setup.

Whether you run a Qjet or not, you still need a fuel pump! There is no mechanical fuel pump location on these engines, so you have to do something electrical for a fuel pump, either in the tank or in the line.

Well after some research, Ill be staying with the original GM crate engine #10067353
with the Comp Cams 12-235-2. Using the GM crate engine #12530283 with a mild Comp Cam only produces 5% gain in HP & TQ at a greater cost.

Vortec heads, a roller cam , and what's probably a point and a half of compression you think would be only about 15 hp ?? I'm guessing 40 - 50 hp !

But not much more torque. In the typical rpms of daily driving, the 350/260 crate with the 12-235-2 cam does very well. 410+ lbft of torque at 2500 rpm is a lot of fun to drive, and hard to beat.

If you have time I am all for rebuilding, establish a good friendship with a machinist and your set. If the truck is just a fun vehicle and not critical to day to day life I would just buy some books, read about it and have a good time.

I actually spent more rebuilding my big block than just ordering a fresh crate 454 but it was alot of fun. A crate engine costs everything at once (unless you have a credit card, I dont) but rebuilding lets you spread big purchases out over time and the end result is a one off custom engine you know everything about.

There is a certain satisfaction to it you only experience if you do it yourself. Transporting yourself in a vehicle you rebuilt the engine and transmission in is pretty cool, a ton of satisfaction.

With that being said, if my Impala SS threw a rod because I was driving it like a moron there would be a crate engine on its way here. Its the family car so we cant wait a year for me to assemble a 383 stroker for it.

I went with a 350 from a local block built to my specs tho I have them a chimp cams 260h everything else came from them 80k later it still performs like day one. Drive hard my friend.
