One of my favorite personal peeves. The spare tire carrier.

Glide out carrier is demonstrated in this dealer video at 12:57:

The two crossmember pieces, one ahead of and one behind were there to support the tire. I @$$ume to keep it from rocking. If you didn't order a spare when you bought the truck you didn't get the crossmembers. Ask me how I know.

Speaking of which, when I tried to buy them from the dealer only one was still available. The rest of the parts were also NLA. The parts guy recommended the winch type holder which I bought, but missing the other crossmember I never got around to installing. Fast forward several years and the internet exists, I'm able to find all the parts to put an original carrier and crossmembers together and I discovered the same thing @RaiderL discovered. That fugger is heavy! So at some point I'll be installing the winch. But I'm keeping the original too. Belt and suspenders, you know. And I will never hate the factory tire carrier regardless of how heavy and awkward it is. What I hated was having the spare in the truck bed. That was frikin' awkard.
My 78 has the in bed mounted spare

My truck is a silverado so maybe it was an option on higher models... plus the bracketry is body color and im pretty sure riveted on so im 95% sure its factory.

All mine are Silverado trim too.
My 78 came with the glide out carrier but only the crossmember and side support are still there. I'm sure because they are riveted.
You'll have to post a pic.

Ok, no problem if you can't. Was just wondering. I'll Google it.

The in-bed spare carrier was for trucks with a receiver hitch. The hitch was mounted to the frame right where the spare would be otherwise. So the only other option was to mount the spare in the bed.

Mine had neither because somebody who shall remain nameless was complaining so much about the cost of the truck that my father elected to skip ordering the spare and just buy one in the aftermarket. Not realizing that if you don't order a spare you don't get a spare tire carrier. So it sat in the bed for decades. At least the bed mount had it secured out of the way of cargo. Awkward otherwise, but functional.

Thanks. It definitely looks factory. It's painted the same color and the hardware looks like something GM would use.

I have one similar to this pic. (Pic from internet). It came with my truck when I bought it. 74 did not have them. I have an in bed tire mount. If you can use the one I have, you can have it. I don't have any other hardware for it. It has been sitting around for 6 years and probably will if you cannot use it. I can take pic of mine later today if you want one.

Sure, I'll take it. Not sure I will find a glide out one. Thanks.
