Wow, 12 pages, and still growing. So many issues with the factory gauges on the 73-87 trucks. GM could have done better, but I think you already know that.

They built a bazilion of them and they are old now. There's always going to be problems with delicate parts such as gauge clusters.

Maybe we should just throw out our old factory piece of crap gauges, not even TRY to fix them, and install a bunch of over-priced Auto Meter gauges in a "custom" housing. That's what we should do...... :party36:

When I first bought my truck I spent time on the gauges, cleaning, re-bulbing, even replaced the oil and volt gauges. Sure those fixes worked, but soon after the dimming down of the entire cluster began again. Even to the point of having to turn on the dome light to read them. I decided to replace it all. Glad I did.

longshot.. sounds like the sender itself is bad The gauge needs to be grounded, not the sender wire?

Why replace it? All you need to do is clean up and paint the inside of the plastic housing and upgrade the light bulbs.

People don't think of these things and they are using 40 year old light bulbs and wonder why they can't see anything.

Yep, I did all that, as I previously stated. I honestly took the factory gauges as far as I could. ----------------> is happier now.

You never said you did that. You just said you replaced some gauges.

I've been lucky too I guess. Of all the trucks, I've only had to repair one printed circuit so far. Just a few bulbs over the years.

Hey, that's great. Just bad luck for me. On occasions when my wife's car needed to be serviced, I was forced to having her drive the truck. Working night shift made it difficult for her to drive it. So, the situation went from being troublesome to a real safety issue. That was enough for me, not to mention, scary for her.
