Doesn't anyone know if you have to weld on or near a gas tank you are supposed to fill it with gas first??? Its true. The fumes can ignite much easier than the liquid. If you keep sparks away from the liquid gas all is well, but the fumes are what is explosive. So you fill the tank with gas to push any fumes out of the tank.

Also, junkyards use torches all the time. Just that the do it yourself, pull a parts don't allow torches or anything flammable or combustable.

My best injury was while I was welding on exhaust overhead. I was wearing cotton coveralls and welding with the truck on a rack. A red hot chunk of metal landed right where my arm bends inside, about the time it started to sting i could smell burning flesh. It went all the way down to the very last layer of skin and took a really long time to heal.

X2 on the safety glasses, as long as the sun is out I always have a pair on. They look like normal sunglasses but are Ansi and osha z87 approved.

Probably the reason I am claustaphobic now is becasue of a very stupid incident I did.

I had just got done installing this transmission I rebuilt. Took it for a test drive all was great. Looked under the car and noticed a leak. Not bad, but for a new trans, should be any leak at all. So I assumed it was the accumuator cover or the O ring for the vac modulator. Grabbed the floor jack, jacked it up, slid under the car, checked the O rings, tightened up the Vac Modulator that was only hand tight and I had forgot to torque it. I was only under the car for maybe 3 minutes. Went ot slide out and couldn't move. The jack had leaked down while I was under the car and the unibody frame came down across my chest and pinned me. I was the only one home, and with big lots, no neighbors that were home could hear me. I was pinned for about 15 mnutes and all these thoughts racing thru my hed. Breathing heavy and scared shitless with all this pressure across my chest was not a good thing at all. Of course the jack continues to slowly leak down and I feel it getting tighter and tighter. Lucky for me, I finally look to the side under some shrubs into the neighbors yard and I see little feet walking down the driveway toward the street. So I yelled the girls name. She didn't hear me or was looking for me and didn't see me and kept walking now back into the house. She has just went to check the mail at the curb. So I am screaming her name and Help, I need help. Finally I hear her yell back, where you at? I said under the car, come here hurrry. She said hold on, let me check on my baby. I said, NO please, come here, I only need you for 5 seconds. Hurry up. Finally she ran over and I told her to pump the jack. She didn't even know how to pump a floor jack. A young teen mom. Finally, she got it up enough so I could slide out. I felt very very lucky, that she went to check the mail. That 15 minutes, seemed like a whole day and I am not even kidding. Moral is, ALWAYS use a jackstand. Even if just for a quick adjustment, always always always use a jack stand and never trust a jack. NEVER !!! I still have the piece of **** jack to this day and I know it still leaks down, but it keepls me in check. I know to alwasy use jack stands now. You'll never see me under a car without being properly supported.

I damn near dropped a truck on a Lift one time, there is mechanical locks that catch every foot or so on modern lifts, when lowering the car you are supposed to pull a lever to release the mechanical locks and raise it a little bit to ensure the mechanical locks release on both sides.

This time I was talking to someone and not paying attention, I just started letting the truck down and one side of the locks did not release. By the time I looked up the right side of the truck lowered a few feet and I damn near lost the truck, it would have been a disaster.

Another thread just inspired me to post this. I used to carry a leatherman everywhere I went but switched to this Smith & Wesson pocket knife. If you notice by my pinky there is a seatbelt cutter, on the very end is a hardened point for breaking glass should you ever be trapped in a car upside down.

A few years ago my uncle who lives in Maricopa Az (right next to fire bird race way) came up to a woman who rolled over a Ford Ranger and was trapped upside down. The thing lit up and my uncle ran to his house to get a fire extinguisher about a mile away but when he got back she had been burnt alive in front of numerous people. Ever since that day I have carried a fire extinguisher in whatever I drive. Had someone had the simple little pocket knife I have they may have been able to break the window and cut the belt to get her out of that truck.

I've got a flashlight that I keep in the truck with seat belt cutter and glass breaker cuz I am claustraphobic and don't like seat belts.

Don't jack up a truck on an incline with a farm jack and forget to put anything down to block the wheels...
