I am currently in the process of my first Big Block Chevy rebuild. I have it completely torn down and am in the process of ordering parts. The motor is in a 74 K20 and I want to build it for low-end torque for towing but still have decent power on the top end. As this is my first ever rebuild I have questions for every part I replace. With that should I just get a stock replacement fuel pump or should I go with something with a higher flow rate and pressure? See below for details:

The truck has an SM465 Trans with a 205T-Case and 4.10 Gears
454 Mark IV Big Block Chevy
Stock Oval Port Heads
Std. Bore with flat top pistons
Putting in an 11-238-3 Comp Cam
Getting an Edelbrock Performer Intake Manifold - 2161
Currently has a 1406 Edelbrock 600 CFM Carb - If I have enough money left I want to switch to a Holley 4160 750 CFM Carb

Any feedback is appreciated Thank You!

FYI if you get a factory 3 port fuel pump for the 454 it is different between the 2WD version and the 4wd version. I ran into this problem about 5 years ago. I'm not sure if the companies have fixed the issue. Carter/Napa was advertising the 2WD pump fit the 4wd.

Here's the difference: The correct pump for my '85 are the shorter version.

A good quality stock style/ outlet/ psi pump should be fine if you really are focused on low end. If you plan to get on it a bunch, I'd probably buy the Edelbrock or Holley mechanical pumps. Probably best to do it for piece of mind anyways.

For carb, again my opinion, you'd be better off with a professionally built Quadrajet. Holley might make more power on dyno for racing but it'll will rarely match the drivability and mpgs of a Quadrajet.

Any carb you get is only going to need 7.5 psi max otherwise it’ll start to push fuel past the needle and seat, a stock type pump is fine.

+1 vote for a good quadrajet.

I use carter pumps, they are reasonable priced and I never had problems with them.
