Fuel pump or ignition kill switch?

I’m trying to install a kill switch on my 76 K15, but I’m not sure where to start. Does anybody have experience or references on how to do this?

I’m having a hard time locating both the fuel pump relay and my ignition switch. I would like to run a toggle switch to a hidden place in the cab, but I’m not finding any info on where to do that on an old truck. The more info/images the better since I’m not sure experiences with this sort of work.

Well if it's got a carbureted 350 with the stock fuel system then it has a mechanical pump on the side of the engine block, so there would be no fuel pump relay because the fuel pump is mechanical not electrical. That leaves the ignition switch. So the simple way would be to install a toggle switch in the wire marked + (positive on the distributor), you can run a length of wire from there to the inside of the vehicle. The actual ignition switch is located down low on the column inside the vehicle, and a switch could be installed from there too.

Yes it’s a carbureted 350. I figured it was mechanical since I wasn’t seeing a relay and found where the fuel pump was located. Thanks for clarifying.

Are these the wires/switches you’re referring to?

On the underhood picture yes it would be the one marked batt.

On the steering column I think you have hold of something else. This link shows a good picture of a new ignition switch, though the color of yours maybe different. https://www.ebay.com/itm/393495995429

And that thing mounts to the column.

I believe that switch is located on the column, under the cover. I was trying to avoid taking the whole column out, but I’m not sure I can get to those wires without taking the whole thing off.

I guess a somewhat easy install isn’t so easy?

Column can be unbolted from the dash support; it will drop down quite a bit. Switch is on top of the column. If automatic trans be sure to disconnect the pointer cable first.

If for an anti-theft modification interrupting the starter circuit will do the same thing. That switch is near the bottom of the column and is somewhat easier to access. I think the wires are purple. You will need a higher amp switch.

I wouldn’t mess with the column and ignition switch. What I did is cut the wire to the batt terminal on the distributor. The end that goes away from the distributor got moved to terminal 30 on a Bosch style relay mounted on the firewall. The other end that goes towards the distributor goes to terminal 87a on the relay. 85 goes direct to the battery and 86 goes to one side of the switch in the cab. The other side of the switch goes to ground near the switch. Basically this will mean that if the relay or switch fails, the ignition will be failed to “on”. When the switch is activated and a ground is applied, the relay is actuated and disconnects the ignition power to the distributor.

@76_shorty If there is nothing wrong with the ignition switch currently why not just splice the switch into the distributor power wire and save yourself the trouble.

What @fast 99 Brian said is exactly right. It's on top of the column. If your just looking for the wiring you might not need to drop it down, but it's pretty easy to drop down.

Ok- this makes sense to me now. I’m going to attempt a switch on the ignition wire to the starter.

I appreciate the info!
