I solved this problem by carrying a section of hose from a dump can....I push the hose into the filler neck and place the nozzle into the hose, elevate and pump...no more fuel on the ground or pump shut off

New to the forum. I am also from California and it's a Big PITA filling my saddle tanks on my 74 K20.
I like your idea. What size dump can hose do you use?

Thanks

Thanks Charlie for starting this thread.

I bought a 74 C20 2 weeks ago. I've been working on it more than driving but so far, so good :)
I went to put gas in her and about 5 seconds in the pump shut off and puked some gas onto the ground. Ultimately it took about 20 minutes to put 19.2 gallons in because I had to hold the pump lever to a trickle.

The truck has 2 tanks but the driver's side is disabled as the filler neck is removed.

I have a 2004 C5 Corvette that shuts some pumps off early, which I will soon fix. So I have been researching the basics of air displacement into an evap canister, and a clogged hose will prevent displacement and cause the pump to shut off early.

The C20 doesn't have an evap canister, tho it must vent somewhere (sorry environment). The filler neck has 2 ports, a main port straight down and a smaller side port. Each has it's own hose but then combines prior to entry to the tank. I'm hoping this secondary port isn't the displacement breather since it would vent back into the filler neck and clearly be an issue with a fancy gas pump nozzle. I am hoping that the displacement breather comes off the sending unit and whatever home made set-up done before is causing the issue. I haven't taken a good look at the sending unit to know whether it's a 1,2 or 3 port. If you know if this is where it's supposed to vent, please post.

Like Delta, I'd like to know what hose size the Dr. is using for at least a workaround.

I plan on posting more when I know more.

After reading the manual posted here (thank you for that btw) the secondary tube in the filler neck is listed as the tank displacement vent. I hopped under and took a look. I cannot see the sending unit unless I drop the tank but pretty sure it is a single port and doesn't have a vent tube. I found what I remembered as a combination tube to be 2 separate tubes. The secondary tube was only about 5 inches long and has a second tube inside it to help keep it's shape due to the extreme bend. No obstruction found.

I swapped it out the secondary tube to a 1 foot piece that I'm hoping will elevate the issue or I will cut it, plug the neck end and use it for venting.

Have you tried cocking the nozzle at an angle? Or maybe not inserting it completely?
Yea some pumps I fill my square at I have to pull the nozzelnout so that the curve is not in there. Leave just the straight part of the tip in. It will still fill up and allow full lock open to be used.

Worst case scenario, I just manually pull back on that outer safety deal and squirt the gas into the filler neck.

Thanks gents.

I filled at a different station the other day after the 1-foot tube, which didn't correct the problem (I didn't really think it would). I was able to pump at about 1/2 speed by pointing the handle about 8 o'clock, thereby having the flow avoid the relief vent. That wasn't too bad.

I have to turn the pump handle upside down and I can pump full blast. Otherwise it shuts off constantly.

Make sure the nuts for the filler tube are there. I was missing one of mine on the passenger side and the angle of the tube was too shallow, put a new one in and works great now.

Easy fix guys.
Like others here have said, just turn the nozzle upside down, you can pump at full speed.
Been doing it this way for years.
