Fuel filling issues with new pumps

The 2 stations I use the most have both recently upgraded their pumps to new ones. I have used both and issue is when filling with auto setting on lowest setting, runs for a few seconds then clicks off. Try again and same thing. Can run slower manually and it will fill, just have to hold lever till full. I am thinking the newer nozzles are at a different angle and my single right side filler neck doesn't coincide with the angle. When I filled before the upgrade, did not have this issue.

Is there an upgrade for the filler neck that is a direct fit that will work better with newer nozzles?

I have seen other fuel fill issues and cannot locate any postings now, unless I overlooked them.

Have you tried cocking the nozzle at an angle? Or maybe not inserting it completely?

Have you tried cocking the nozzle at an angle? Or maybe not inserting it completely?


Tried not inserting not as far but still not working correctly. Kicks off and spits gas out. May not stay cocked without holding handle, not sure on that one.

Had new tank and all rubber, fuel sender replaced 1 year ago last December.

It has the vacuum canister for vent. Is it possible canister needs replaced? I think it is the OEM.

I'm not real sure, I think it may just be an issue with those newfangled pump nozzles. Just too finicky and sensitive. Like the cats of the gas pump world.

Marvin makes gas pumps?

FWIW, on my '85 you have to leave the nozzle hanging half out or it shuts off. Don't know if that applies on a '74, but mine has been like that from day one.

My 74 was not designated for unleaded. At least according to filler tube not having the reducer as unleaded had, and does not state Unleaded Fuel only on gas gauge. Just wondered if later years when unleaded was required, other than the reducer, if the filler neck angle changed? I'm not familiar with later year model trucks.

Diesel trucks don't have reducers either. It's just that the necks are on a very shallow angle and sticking the nozzle in all the way leaves the little vent hole on the nozzle sitting in a puddle of fuel in the filler neck which triggers the shut-off.

Get used to it. The 2018 I drive for work can’t handle it. The black truck does ok but it has 2 breathers so it can displace the air in the tank easier.

I find at certain pumps I have to clock the nozzle like bucket mentioned. It’s different vehicle to vehicle. My new truck and service van like the hose covering the four o’clock position as opposed to the 6 o’clock position if it were hanging straight down. My diesel excursion and both Hondas will take it any old way. Can’t remember specifically on the square...

You can try to blow through the canister inlet with a piece of hose. If air blows out the other side, it’s not clogged. Make sure the vacuum lines didn’t come apart, and if it has a little mesh filter on the bottom, go ahead and replace it. On my car, I’ve noticed that the diaphragm in the nozzle won’t get tripped in time, and it’ll blow a little fuel out the filler hole before it shuts off. Always thought it was weird, but if I catch it when the sound changes, it’s fine.

My 99 Trans Am is picky with pumps too. I've found that if I pull it out just a bit it will take. Sometimes I rotate it a few degrees and it will also take but I have to hold the pump till full. Lesser of two evils between holding it and slow fill. YMMV

No issues with my '81 on either tank. None of my vehicles for that matter.
