fresh air intake

I am considering opening up a hole on the fresh air intake on my 77 350ci C20. As you know the air flow comes in from the side (not directly) on the radiator support assembly. I assume the design is to keep water from entering the fresh air tube then into the carb/engine. Anybody do this and what has been your experience?

Good idea, I have seen somewhere where they put a second air intake tube into the air filter housing and ran them both out to the core support. Not sure if it was on a square body or a muscle car but I bet we can figure it out, I’ll do some research and get back to you.

I was in the process of the dual intake. Picked up the pieces in the radiator support for both sides of the radiator. Just didn't pick up the tubes by the time I sold the truck.

It’s home made, take the tube from a spare cover and cut and weld it in place, that’s the only way I have seen it done. I could be wrong.

All of the above.

On the pickup rad supt there is a knockout plug on either side of the radiator. V8 engines went to one side and 6 cylinders used the other.

I adapted a truck setup to my Chevelle and ran the dual snorkel setup with a flat hood for many many years. I finally went to a cowl induction scoop went I went to a lighter liftoff fiberglass hood.

Where can one of those be purchased?

I made it from 2 air cleaners from the junkyard. $2 for each one, couldn't pass up the challenge. Both vacuum valve work off of one heat riser.

Later version for tbi. Wanted to mount the second snorkel upside down for a symmetrical look but it wouldn't clear the master cylinder. 4" abs pipe from the hardware store was used at the core support with the intake tucked behind the headlights. All of the original bits are still there so it passes Cali smog checks.

Thanks for all the replies. Some cool set-ups. My main question was about water ingestion if I open up the fresh air assembly by drilling a 3 inch hole in it. Anyone running a direct airflow modification on their truck?

Not on a truck, but on my Camaro, I put the air cleaner inlets directly behind the center opening in the bumper. It's seen plenty of heavy rainstorms and I've never had any problems with pulling in water.

Basically two air cleaners, stacked on top of each other, with the air intakes going to the core support on each side of the radiator.

Even tho this is an entirely different setup than what you’re wanting to do, when it rains I suck moisture into the filters and have no issues. I would think the ducts wouldn’t pull near as much than I do, if any.
