I'd have to try it first before I spent any money. He already pulled it out once- how bad could it be? Might fudge around and fix it. If he sands it down enough... Wouldn't take much.

Meh.
I'd rub it with some emery cloth real good and run it. I'm no pro but it don't look that bad to me... Hit it with the emery cloth dude. It be fine.

honestly I was thinking naval jelly to remove ALL the rust, smear a thin layer of JB weld in the low spots and THEN the emery cloth, work your way down to really fine so it's basically indistinguishable. It's not like a rod bearing or cylinder head or anything, that'll be good enough to make a sealing surface for an axle. Even if it doesn't last another 40 years, it'll last a lot longer than if you toss it it back in like that, or even more expensive just jump straight to replacing it...

I do like your idea RecklessWOT...
I actually have a dental tool where I can remove all that rust and make the rust spots deeper to create more of a surface for the JB to hold on to. Kind of like Swiss cheese it all around like the old bondo repairs.

I'll keep you guys posted as I go along.

I would wire wheel it and check carrier bearings and run it and see how it goes. Is this something you have been running off and on?

Id just run it as is. Drive like for a couple 10 miles, then change the fluid, and call it good.

well if you take it out and clean off the rust but leave the pits it will last longer than a clean one with the same wear as THE pits will hold gear oil in them and there will be less wear on gear.

Hello Square Deal. I hope all is well.

I am poking a little fun at y'alls now....

I was recomended to @AyWoSch and he is hooking me up with all the parts I need as I go along.
He has some good pre-owned parts.

I am just starting to get this truck going. It was parked for a good long time. It was from a working west Texas cattle ranch. Had a real hard life but she will get going.
Slowly but it is getting to the point where she will go, Thanks to All of you guys for helping me out! :waytogo:



I will replace all bearings, u joints, and seals after.
Like @Mr Clean mentioned to me... take your time and do it right.

I work very, very slow, but I manage with my helper GS Dog Duke. I have 4 operations on my neck with a bunch of hardware left inside me and a 4 level fusion on my lumbar.

I would beg to differ on the rust pits lol. Not saying that was the cause of this but definitely didn't help!
