It definitely has value to the right person. Being from California everything '76 and newer has to get smogged every 2 years. When I sold my '79 a couple of years ago, it cost me about $500 in new parts to get it to pass for the sale. My OEM intake was warped. I had to get a smog **** to approve a Performer EGR type intake before the smog station would test it.

referee is to nice of a word for them, I fixed it for you

Yep, Commifornia is fuct up like that. It's a money game. There's no reason you should have to see the Nazis to approve a Performer EGR manifold. They should have a list of pre approved parts that they know for a fact without a doubt are emissions legal. Like certain model of headers that have bungs for the AIR tubes or heat riser, Intakes with EGRs, air cleaners etc.

Yeah I live in Oklahoma so I don’t have to worry about the emissions. But I am curious as to if I can use the factory 2bbl setup that’s currently on the engine without the emissions that’s on it? I’ve never used anything factory and I’m gonna have to for a short bit till I can buy a few parts.

They do. Any replacement part that is CARB certified is usually good to go.

Part of the reason when searching on Craigslist I stick to pre-98 for diesels or pre-76 for gas engines. As you’ve stated before, all diesel squares are smog exempt in CA. A lot of guys seek them out for that reason. Ls swaps, etc.

It also goes by zip code. For instance, if you have a residence in Lake Tahoe, CA, every vehicle registered to that address is smog exempt; doesn’t matter what it is. Some zip codes, even OBD2 vehicles only get the sniffer. So if it’s cleaner than stock, you can run other parts.

There are some odd exceptions.

Also have another curiosity question. The canister that’s supposed to be under the hood in front of/at the drivers side of the radiator. What is it and what is it for?

Its the magical cylinder of confusion of course or just a Charcoal canister. Multiple ports with valves on top, stops gas from leaking out of **** when it expands and contracts via atmospheric conditions, works with pcv n carb. Yada yada yada. Also connects to your favorite egr. It's harmless, I replaced mine recently because it was original and gunked to hell and the truck starts with much less cranking than it used to. My starter wishes I would of replaced it a long time ago.

Okay so is it possible to run the engine without all that crap with factory intake and carb? I’ve gotta run those until I can get aftermarket parts.

All of what crap? You gotta narrow it down a little. What is there now?

It’s a 100% factory 350 with a 2bbl carb setup. Has all the egr and emissions crap on it. Can I run it without using the emissions crap connected or will it run like total crap?

This is one of those ask 10 gear heads get 15 different answers questions.

For instance the smog pump thing. Some swear it robs power, some swear it doesn't and initial starts and driving while warming are much smoother.

So my previous owner was a real piece of something, bless his heart. No original exhaust or intake manifolds. So I do not run the pump or the egr. I do run the pcv and the evap canister, sort of the minimum.

With that said the truck runs but is nowhere near as good running as my dad's I drove 30 or however many years ago. All stock with way more miles on it back then than mine now. That thing was smooth as silk through all throttle delivery. Like I mentioned earlier mine has always been a hard starter. Middle throttle acceleration meh. Low speed or maintaining speed just putzing around pretty good. Hammer down and winding out, ******* loves it. But nothing like that all original.

There are quite a few things needing to be capped if you want to unhook them or you will definitely have a vacuum leak and it will run like **** if at all.

A 2 barrel with a 350? let's see it.

I’ll get pictures of it later today when it quits raining. It’s in an old 81 Jimmy. Some guy had swapped out the original v6 for it. My grandpa said it was like that when he bought it. So I’m guessing it was built originally like that cause it has all the right stuff on it. My grandpa has a 2bbl on his 350 in his feed truck as well although I don’t know why. He only drives slow and around the farm. Gets 2mpg cause he’s always in 4wd and never goes over 25 if that.

2 bbl 350s were pretty common..that's not unusual.
They're worth good money too. When you take it off, don't tear it up.

I’m not going to. When I’m able to switch to a 4bbl I’m just going to clean the carb and intake up and put them up somewhere

Some argue it robs power because it is being turned, I'd argue its useless and if the government ever looked into it they would sue GM for them, and its added weight which robs horse power..Remeber the big scam for the TDI VWs because they have a clean tune for idle but were dirty while driving, yep thats what all the fuss was over. Can you imagine them finding out that
GM used a belt driven pump to force clean air directly into the exhaust to make them pass emissions for 20 years?
