So my 82 c20 has a small block. I was told it was a 350 but when I look up the number on the pad behind the alternator it says it's a 400. Code is V08 TTC... which is it??

Look behind the driver head. Alternator pad isn't always conclusive.

Without having the block code, is there any other way to find out if the small block engine I have (it's not in a vehicle) is a 400 without pulling a head? I have a Chevy small block engine that has 3 freeze plugs per side, but some other things on it make me wonder what I actually have.

TTC was used twice 1980 400 4bbl auto California emissions or 1982 350 4bbl turbo 350. Maybe you can some deductive reasoning, get the carb number, look up year. Look for evidence of CA. Emissions, or just use probability did you pull it of an 80 or an 82.
Never mind, just reread your post it's in an 82 and you were told it's a 350 and it's about as far from California as you can get. I'm going to go out on a limb abd say it's a 350

Pull a plug and use a piece of wire and rotate the engine (by hand) and note when it hits tdc and bdc. That should get you an approximate stroke (be sure to keep the wire from going too diagonal). From there deduce if its 3.75" or 3.48".

The 400 block is the only factory small block block with 3 freeze plugs per side (later 400 blocks only have 2 but the “boss” for the 3rd is cast into the block). Also the factory 400 harmonic balancer has a “notch” roughly 1/2 the way around it, from being externally balanced.

Later 400 block with 3rd freeze plug boss that is un machined

Good to know! Did 400s ever come with a canister oil filter instead of the spin-on style?
Thanks for the information!

Drivers side of the block in the rear, large stamp motor ID, smaller stamp date code.
This is a 400 block cast in 1972
