I took it all back apart once again (the horn button broke out so somethings wrong in the steering wheel but I’m not complaining since the horn didn’t have a button in the wheel so it doesn’t work) cleaned bearings and the bearing at the ujoint had lost four balls. Cleaned and put back together. I replaced both bearings the second time I had only changed the inner the first time. It feels fine now and I’m driving the truck to work tomorrow hopefully with a working steering wheel. The truck has started doing the starter grinding when cranking again. I checked the bolts they’re tight.

Trucks been going great until last day or three… started has kinda sounded high pitched all of a sudden and then this morning the truck backfired through carb(could smell it) when I was taking a turn in second(20ish mph) and then to leave for work the starter clunked and sounded higher pitch and then once it sounded normal after a second the truck fired right up. The truck has also started dieseling again. If I let it idle a second before shutting it off it almost always diesels, if I shut it off while I’m still up in rpms while rolling it doesn’t usually diesel and if I rev it up a little bit and shut it off while it’s still dropping rpm it usually doesn’t.

Just tightened starter bolts and now the truck won’t crank.. it clicks and loses all power then I have to go remove a battery cable and reattach to get power back what gives

No battery isn’t dead it was running just seconds before this… I shut it off to video cranking incase it did something stupid, in which it did, I’m going to replace the battery cable ends and see what that does. The ground end is getting warm so I’m assuming it’s a problem

After replacing both battery cable ends the truck cranks again but it’s still high pitched like it’s spinning really fast and it still skipped on the first crank

@SirRobyn0 your knowledge could be of use right now. I really need this fixed ASAP since it’s my ride to work lol I have to leave the house around 545AM and I’d rather not have to fight this thing in the morning

Ok let me look over your recent posts and I will get back to you as soon as I can. I'm at work at the moment, so as soon as I get a couple customers files finished up so they can pick their cars up I'll look over your stuff.

That thing sounds terrible. What did the flywheel look like when you pulled the starter? Do the teeth look ok, or are they ground down? The starter gets power through the big main wire running to it, but it grounds through the main body of the starter into the engine block. The ground then travels from the engine block back to the battery using whatever ground straps have been installed. You need to make sure you have a clean, unimpeded ground path from the starter, through the mounting surface and bolts, into the engine and then through to the main ground wire. What I usually do is run a big ground strap from the alternator bracket to the frame, then from the frame up to the negative terminal on the battery. Make sure the alternator bracket has a good clean contact to the engine block and/or intake manifold as well.

At this point I would think the starter mounting surface needs to be cleaned, flywheel replaced, and all grounds checked/cleaned.

After shimming the started again it is no longer grinding but I wonder what made it start grinding today?

The flywheel teeth look fine, other than shiny from use but they aren’t chipped and none appeared missing. I used a 1/8” drill bit to set the shim distance. It was a bit far out but I don’t know what could’ve caused it to all of a sudden need reshimmed

Ok, so it would be really helpful if you could do a starter draw test but I know you can't. If the cables are good, and the grounds are good. It's either a bad starter of flywheel or both. Eric, pretty much sums it up.

Shimming obviously had a good effect, but that starter still sounds very weak. I would replace it and then reassess it.

Yep. This $hit has gone on too long!
While I agree it's gone in another direction from the original thread intent, just keep in mind in the end he's just like all the rest of us and is trying to fix his truck.
