Will my stock dip stick work with a deep pan or will I need to change it as well?

Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk

Stock dipstick will work. But for deeper pans you usually want a deeper filter or a filter extension so you don't starve the trans of fluid.

I used this pan which gives more fluid, has some passive cooling. But doesent need a longer filter or extension because the stock filter sits on top of the tubes. It is more expensive.

Edit: also has a spot for temp sending unit.

Id like to add, I use lubelocker trans pan gaskets. Hands down, best gasket I've ever used. Goes on dry and doesent leak even after reusing it 3 times.

How do I know if I need one? I just bought a new filter for mine and was gonna put the new pan and filter on.

This is the filter I have

But, if your fluid level is the same but, just with 2 extra quarts, I don't see the problem. I still don't want to starve the Trans of fluid.

I really don't know completely, but when I was researching mine I read something. It basically said with the deeper pans you do have more fluid capacity. However, with the deeper pan the fluid in the pan can slosh around more. If the filter is not extended down towards the bottom of the pan somehow (special longer necked filter or extension piece) then the fluid could potentially slosh away from the filter. I've also read some horror story about the filter coming loose (no idea how) and loosely flopping around in the pan.

From my understanding, you want that filter to be right about at the bottom of the pan to take advantage of the higher fluid capacity.

I'll see of I can find the thing I read..

Edit: Could very well be false information. But at the time it did make some sense to me. I'm sure if I am wrong someone here will correct me.

It makes sense. When you install about pan on an engine you adjust the pickup time so it's near the bottom. I could see the same being true for a tranny pan

I'm not able to find the thing I read many moons ago now.

I do believe that aftermarket deep pans should specify which filter to use. Or include an extension for the factory filter.

If not factoring in the fluid sloshing around.

And the fluid is up to the same level as the shallow pan (stock dip stick) then the stock filter should be in the same amount of fluid as with a regular pan. But the only effect the extra fluid would have would be to change temp slower. But I think pulling fluid from mid to high level of the pan would be cleaner fluid then say the very bottom. Alot of theoretical mobo jumbo I'm sure, really have no idea which would be the better way to go. But this th400 B&M pan does include a filter extension.

I took the truck check to them immediately after changing the carb. They looked it over carefully and said everything looked and shifted great. I don't see what more I could have possibly done.

Sounds like you have the cable set correctly. What about the vacuum tip-in switch for the converter lock up? Is that circuit all wired in correctly? When driving before the trans failure, could you feel the converter lock? With a tach you would see about 200-300 difference in RPM.

I don't have a tach yet unfortunately. I'm also not sure what the converter locking up would feel like. But, I did make sure the tip in switch has vacuum going to it. (If I'm remembering correctly it's vacuum operated. I don't know if the trans is wired correctly. I assume so.

You're on to something because they do sell extensions for the filter. It just doesn't but does make sense to me. Lol

I'll probably get one to be safe. Thanks for ruining my plans for tomorrow. Lol jk

It has an edelbrock carb. I haven't done anything to it for a while. I checked the tv cable and it was adjusted correctly.

Have the shop set the tv cable. With gauges, to be safe.

They'll definitely be the one that sets it for me. Idk how they do it but I'll ask

TC kicking in almost feels like another gear shift, but a little more subtle

The filter extension is included with a deep pan.

you can test the lockup pretty easy get the truck on a smooth flat road, hold the speed steady around 50mph. Don’t let off the gas, lightly tap the brakes. Tap the brakes just hard enough to turn on the brake lights, but not actually slow the car. If the converter works you will feel the engine speed up a couple hundred RPM, release the brake and the converter should lock again with a reduction of engine speed.

When I get my truck back I will give this a try.
