any concerns with the heim joints ratting/moving on the bolts or do you plan on running NAS bolts? Have you thought about a way to make it a double shear setup for the heim vs single? What size tubing ans wall thickness did you use? Also did you plug weld the threaded adapter into the tub as well as the actual joint between the tube and adapter?

Looks cool and I'm all for improvement.
but my only concern(s) is that it hasn't been tested to a failure point and the only testing it will see is on a road driven vehicle. I sincerely hope for you and others that try to emulate your progress that it works well and is strong. Other than that, please keep posting! Some things we do for function, others purely for form!

If it works for him, that's fine. I don't have a problem with his build as much as I do his general attitude.

Clearly the guy was proud of his idea, came on here to show it off, and expected everyone to line up to suck his tallywacker and tell him what a genius he is. When that didn't go according to plan, he got defensive and started playing the victim. The big bad moderators are being mean!

Mountain out of a molehill.

If you’re going to act like this and jump down the throat of anyone who offers constructive criticism (especially people who have FAR more knowledge than you and are legitimately trying to help you) and tell people to stay off your thread, maybe you should do everyone a favor and just stay off this forum all together.
I got attacked by bucket....then it escalated to every ******* here taking swipes over a stupid HEIM joint. As for you, keep your damn opinions to yourself. Its this very reason this is such a mess. One can choose to be kind here even when there is an issue, but I will not tolerate people like you spewing their venom and expecting me to deal with it. Don't like me? Change the page.

Yes, I have only seen HEIMS used with cross over steering. I've read they can rattle when worn out. I felt that if they do, they are cheap and very easy to replace. I also feel the steering that was once a nightmare in this truck could benefit from the stiffer reaction of a heim vs a ball joint. I have the old unit rebuilt. But, I am going to test the new unit. If heims don't pass the test we will install the old drag link. As for the welding, I have more to do. it needs a bit more than what you see in the photo. After that I can test it.

This is to all the guys that want to add their two cents. I am trying to do something new, by myself, with new products if possible. This is a complete 78 Scottsdale rebuild. Some things are standard old school and some i've upgraded. I don't need any more attacks, arguments, bad attitudes, or opinions that aren't decent and constructive. If you don't like me or flipping heim joints, keep moving on. If you have something to say about the part or the build...please do.

The only one attacking anyone on this thread is you. He pointed out, correctly I might add, a lot of reasons why most of what you said in your initial post was not true. You then went on the attack.

This is not only NOT new tech, or more modern than the stock system, but can be potentially dangerous. So for anyone reading this thread and thinking "wow that's cool, maybe I'll try that".. please don't. It is your single point of steering failure. Any piece on that fails or cracks and you will be a non-steering 75mph missile on the freeway.

Thanks for the input. So tell me about the guys using heims in cross over steering. Are you telling me that's ok, but my design is just "cool" and will fail? You guys seem to be on the attack because i used this in a push pull and not a cross over. Are you going to go on a crusade here against cross over steering and heims? Whos next? And no, Bucket chose to be an *******...his call and his choice. I responded in kind.

So about a month ago I posted a string here about a drag link. This is a modern option to the clunky Chevy design on all Squarebodys. Well, did some thinking, came up with a design, and ordered parts from RuffStuff. I now have a functional NEW drag link that will work with my 78 Scottsdale 4x4. This is DOM tube with left - right tube ends welded together. I then put in 7/8 HEIM joints. The pics show my steps, which aren't really that many....but it gets me the 15.5 inches of device that once was in there. The spacers aren't shown in the pic, but this guy should be able to articulate really well and make the steering very solid. Heims don't last as long as ball joints but the ease of replacement makes this just too easy to do....cheap too! Now time to clean it up, sand, and powder coat. Patent pending #752857841155689
It doesn’t look like chromoly, but just making sure that isn’t chromoly right?

One more question while you tell me this is a single point of failure...how is this different? The ball screws into the tube, the heim screws in. The is a joint with a ball and a joint with a heim. The heim is 7/8 inches of stainless steel with a 3/4 inch grade 8 BOLT. The ball is a joint inside a housing. Both connect to the mid tube the exact same way. WTF is the difference you are trying so hard to tell me about that will make my truck into a rocket??

Nobody "attacked" you. Nobody was taking swipes or cutting you down or any of that. You're being a drama queen.

As far as being kind and spewing venom, how about you take your own advice.

If you have something to say about the part or the build...please do.

LOL. Sure, say something about the part or the build, but only if we agree with it, right?

So many contradictions, so much irony. This guy can't be serious.

No, not Chromoly. DOM tube, stainless steel parts.
Drawn over mandrel can be any number of materials including chromoly, but as stated, your piece didn’t look like 4130 in the photo. Anyhow, carry on…
