Double wall exhaust system, anybody do it ?

For the 13th time...you should put a mechanical pump on it! Lol
Lucky 13, put the stock fuel pump back on WITHOUT the cam rod. Bob's you uncle stock return lines reinstalled.

Leaning towards this option since my fuel line questions haven't been explained.

Here's the update ya'all have been waiting for.
By the time the truck got into town, the fuel pump was warm, but it didn't vapor lock.
Driving home, it ran good all the way with no issues, but the pump was HOT.
Evidently the return from the new fuel filter isn't enough liquid to cool the electric pump.
Time for a water spray system at the push of a button to cool the pump, or spend big bucks on a rotary style electric pump.
Only problem with the rotary pump is it's louder than the sound of the truck engine running and it can be heard blocks away.

Do you have an amp clamp? If so, you can see how many amps that pump is actually pulling versus its designed rating.

Do you have an amp clamp? If so, you can see how many amps that pump is actually pulling versus its designed rating.

I do have an inductive meter, but I have never had any luck getting accurate readings with it.
Got it to see if the house solar panels were putting out the correct amount of power, but it acted like there was too much space between the wire and the clamp and it wasn't sensing enough energy to give a reading.

Something to remember here... you don't necessarily need it to pump enough fuel to keep the pump cool. You only need it to flow enough fuel so that the fuel isn't in contact with the hot pump long enough to vaporize. It sounds like that was the case today. I would just drive it a bunch and see if your problem is gone. It sounds like you have enough fuel flow to keep it from vapor locking, which is all you were really looking for.

Also, I'm not really buying the fuel pump cam lobe wiped thing if you were getting fuel pumping but it was ticking. I wouldn't expect the lobe to wipe like that, it would most likely wear off the high point and just stop pumping. You would have to wear a huge groove in the cam to have it just be loose all the time. It might be worthwhile to put a rod in there and actually measure the amount of throw you get and how long the pushrod needs to be. I've also seen some instances where someone installed the wrong pushrod and it was either too long or too short. It should be 5.75" long for a SBC I believe.

I have several spare pump rods, I will build up some weld on the end of one, polish it smooth, and see if that works.
It did pump adequate gas when it was installed before with the ticking, so I would think the base circle portion of the cam lobe could be worn down, but the eccentric part to operate the rod was still enough stroke to pump fuel.

Can't you look into the block with the pump off and no inspection plate. I you can see the cam right? What's it look like?

I could if the truck wasn't in the way of my view.
Maybe pull the engine out to do the inspection.
But if I am going to pull the engine out, the oil pan comes off to yank the timing cover and the cam will get replaced.

My lobe wore off also 1986 305 engine first it acted like a bad pump, replaced it nbd.Real soon it was acting up again I verified it by removing the pump pushing the push rod up with my finger and hitting the starter with a remote start switch, the pushrod was contacting the lobe but the lobe had almost no lift left. It's really not that uncommon, not the first time I've seen it.

Do you have a good power wire running to the pump? Have do you have it grounded might be worth running a ground to the engine ground strap.But as long as the pump keeps spinning and the fuel can no longer vaporize and get trapped in the line your problems solved.FWIW your return port on the filter should be the high point, just like a brake bleader it takes air/ vapor whatever from the highest point.

The truck hasn't been driven since the trip for water a few days ago.
I need to pick up a package in town Monday and need more water, so I will drive it again to see how it behaves (or not).
Plus I am trying to find the ambition to yank the seat out to make replacing the interior wiring harness and fuseblock easier.
I dread doing that job, but first need to finish assembling the 350 for Crazyark's truck so he will have wheels again.
Doesn't help it's scorching hot working in the sun.

I lived in AZ for 2 years. My first ambition would be to build a car port with a misting system! Then I’d concentrate on automotive projects. Even working in my garage down there in the summer was borderline torture, much less outside!

I lived in AZ for 2 years. My first ambition would be to build a car port with a misting system! Then I’d concentrate on automotive projects. Even working in my garage down there in the summer was borderline torture, much less outside!

A carport for shade would be a huge improvement, but as things stand now, on my low fixed income, I am lucky just to keep the house/land/trucks going and have food and other basic necessities.
Any construction projects would be a luxury not in the budget, so i deal with working in the elements.
