Double hump heads worth it?

I know some of you may have seen my posts about upgrading my gear ratio, or swapping in a 350 for my 305 engine. And I appreciate all the help.

Now I have another question. Somebody is trying to trade me a 350 block with 2 sets of heads. This is all I know about the heads:

The first set was described as 193 heads big valves

The second set was described as a set of double hump heads 202 valves with a set of screw in studs.

He said the block is good no cracks, but just the bare block, needs cleaned up.

It's only going to cost me something I don't need and $100. What does everybody think? I've heard of double hump heads before, but don't know much about them. I'm not looking for a 400+ HP engine, just a good running one with some umph. I know absolutely nothing about the 193 heads with big valves. I don't even know what that means.

This person is 4 hours away so I want to be sure before I go.

What's the casting # on the double humps? Are they with or without accessory holes?

The block is completely bare he said. I'll try and get a casting number. Am I looking for a particular casting number? What types of accessories attach right to the heads?

Alternator, power steering brackets, and maybe AC brackets attach to the accessory holes in the heads. The earlier camel hump heads didn't have accessory holes. Later camel humps did, so you can reuse "modern" brackets with them.

What are my options if they don't have accessory holes? Can they be drilled and tapped? Or what do I do?

The casting number is 461 and no accessory holes.

Seriously, if you don't have the money to do gears AND an engine... you certainly cant afford to build a bare motor with pieced together parts. I can't stress enough how much ahead you will be to find a decent engine/gear combination with a trashed trans or completely destroyed body for dirt cheap and swap them into your truck. Go on rockauto and start putting all of the components you can think of for building an engine in your cart and see how much that will cost you. Then double it for all the parts you don't know you need or have to pay too much for to get because you need that one specific part to finish it. That is figuring in your time or paying someone with the knowledge to inspect and do the machine work that might be needed for a block and heads of unknown origin and history. I can assure you it will be much more expensive than you think.

Those 461's could be a money making deal though. The resto folks probably still pay good money for them.
