I'm just barely...starting a slow restoration on my 78 gmc. Today I started with one of the most common problems. I have to slam the door to get it to shut. I pulled the handle off and removed the latch.
I'm looking for a good diagram for reinstallation and perhaps a lead on replacement parts for a reasonable price. I don't want to have to do this again for many years so I want to do it right the first time .. thanks for any assistance

Below, see some info on door handle R&R - from the 1978 Service Manual. You didn't mention what parts you require so I can't offer any leads.

And you know - in my experience at least - if you need to slam your door in order to get it shut the problem isn't with the handle. It is more likely an alignment issue between the latching mechanism and the striker bolt. The whole door may need to be aligned.

Chances are, but maybe not... You can fix those doors for about .50 cents or actually about $3 since I think that's about the shortest stick of pex you can buy. I carry pieces around in my glove box. When other square owners hit me up or I hit them up in parking lots and such, if their doors are messed up, I fix them in about a minute. It works well, I've fixed a bunch of doors with this method. In short, the striker sleeve wears and/or gets brittle and breaks off, then you have a slamming door problem. This will give them a nice crisp latch and unlatch when you open and close the doors.

Ive been watching videos all night . I found some great ones by IMC truck. Mines a 78 and the video is on 81-87 but the concept is the same and has been extremely helpful.
I'm looking to do a complete door rebuild but my biggest question was on the reassembly of the latch assembly . The alignment is actually perfect.. checked that first "constant problem on my jeep". Turns out I found that the door strike is supposed to have a nylon ring that's missing and causing the loose door problem. Thank you so much for your help. I'll try to keep you posted on progress ...

Yep, the pex method I posted the link to above is what corrects the nylon ring missing or broken. I suggest you try that first before you do anything else. You might find the doors and latches are just fine.

In case you missed it, see post #3 for more on the Pex-fix. Replacing the missing nylon ring with a short piece of Pex tubing was what he was talking about.

Got it ... wow ... that's crazy easy ... wish I found that before I yanked my door completely apart ...haha... oh well motivated me to get going on the project as a whole ... I'll ask here first next time for sure though ..thanks for your help
