The Torque Converter to lock up at cruising speeds. Like once you're up to speed and level off and smooth out your RPMS, the TC will lock up solid. Why you want it? #1 is cuz it makes the trans much much cooler, and #2 it works kinda like having another gear by 3-5% dropping your rpms by 200-300rpm an saving fuel.

If that were the case EVERYONE would be running a 4L80-E. However, you do have that the option to run the 4L80-E with a Full Manual Valve Body. Harsh shifting and NO Auto features at all whatsover. You have to have to shift it manually, just like it says. Upshift , Downshift when you come to a stop and all. Just like a manual trans wo a clutch pedal. You'd even have to manually lock up the converter. Well, I guess you could use a 700r4 manual vac swtich for Lock UP if you wanted to, but then have to hook up disablers like the throttle switch and brake light to kill the lock up.

LOL...reminds me of my brother's 69 super beetle with auto clutch.

Sounds handy. Do I need to order a special TC? I was going to get whatever HD TC the trans guy suggests. Down the road I might want to hook up a lock-up I guess. Right now I'm itching to just make it road-worthy.

My mom and dad had one one those. Called AutoStick. It was also a 69. Then they got the 71 Fuel Injected Squareback that was a real 4 speed.

I got a dead 700 in a K5 I got to deal with myself. Im not sure of a best way to deal with mine yet. I have used 700's, 400's and even a 4,l80 but not sure of the easiest route. I'm thinking of leaving my engine stock 350 fi but swapping axles yet. I was quoted $1100 to rebuild my 700 but I hate to spend twice what I gave for blazer on just a transmission.

What I was trying to say is I have a pile of used transmissions to swap in, but no matter what way a person goes there's there's pros and cons to the swap. Putting another used 700 in may fix the problem or it could be junk to. A rebuilt 700 best answer but expensive. Putting a 4L80 in is a expensive swap but strongest route in most cases. Turbo 400's a cheaper route but loose overdrive along with the 350's. I have almost half a semi trailer of Chevy transmissions so possibilities are about endless for me but its a tough decition of best fix.

Lots of people give up on these Squares when they need transmisisons cuz they don't want to spend $1000 on an old truck.

I got my 85 K1500 with a New Crate motor that had Approx 10K miles on it for $500. The kid had just put new headers, new Eddy Intake and Eddy Carb on it. Those 3 things alone were $500. He didn't know to hook up the TV cable and fried the trans. To rebuild R&R he was quoted $1400. His dad said fugg the money pit and sold it. I rebuilt a Th350 core for about $100 in parts and been drivng it since.
I like finding Squares with bad transmissions. My 84 C20 with a 30K Crate 454, I got for $100. Pretty much cost me nothing for the parts I had here for different kit left over parts, built the Th400 for nothing, a known good clean used TC and been driving it since too.

Yeah, but that $1000 doesn't look so bad once you have had a few months of $450+ payments on a new one, and are stuck in those payments for 5 + years.

Get a 400 built by HR...if you are giving up OD, might as well gain strength.

Yup, that will do. I would prefer something the HR rebuilt. I really don't need the overdrive.

Then if you want, go to an rv wrecker and get an OD unit.

The only bad thing with that option, converting to 400 would require Tcase adapters, drivshaft mods etc etc, and for the cost of all that, could just build the beefy 700r4 and back at sqaure one.
