You can get a tachometer with a shift indicator light, set it at around 2500 rpms or 3000. Then when the engine revvs up and gets to 3000 rpms the shift light lights up (usually bright red) and lets you know its time to shift. That would just be a basic guideline, you can shift at higher rpms if you need more power like for towing, or a little lower if your just putting around and want a smooth shift. Or you can hold the same gear for certain speed zones, like 2nd gear for 15 mph zones, 3rd gear for 30 mph zones, etc. What i mean is you don't have to shift through all the gears just because the truck's rolling, it just all depends on your speed what gear you need. Also if the truck you have now is 4WD you can put it in 4Lo and it will help keep you from stalling it out. You can just about dump the clutch at idle in 4Lo and not kill the engine. I'd like to read on here that you gave it a shot, as long as you don't wreck anything. Just remember if you get in any trouble and not sure what to do you can turn the key off 1 position to kill the motor but not lock the steering column and as long as the truck is in gear it will come to a stop.
