I have a 86' GMC 1 ton dully. It has a DANA 60 with a 10 bolt cover. It currently has 4.56 rear end gears. I want to change them to something taller. Preferably 3.73's. what do i need to do?

A different size carrier or if they are availble in such a gear jump, gears to fit your series 4 carrier

It's not a Dana 70HD?

It'll be a 70HD. (60 and 70 share the same cover)

@Michael Bellomy check the webbing on the housing, lower passenger side, rear face - it will have the axle model cast in it ("70HD"). Also, look at the axle tube size, it should be 4" and no D60 ever had that big of a tube.

4.56 is a the ratio break so you'll need a 4.10 and higher carrier to change to 3.73's. You will need to have someone set the gears up.

Not saying you don’t have a 60,but is that the number cast on the lower right corner, next to the cover?

I would of thought a Dana 70 or 14 bolt.Anyhow,you will need a carrier for 4.10

IF it's a D60 rear axle it's been swapped in, GM never used a D60 in the rear of square body trucks.
