Damaged block from shipping!

Hi guys ended up getting my block delivered today and its been cracked on the corner where the transmission bolts on. Do you think this could be successfully welded. Then reamed and retapped. Unbelievable that this has happened again. This is my second block that hasn't worked out. Am going back to see the shipping company tomorrow to see if they will do the right thing.

i wouldn’t run it, it looks like it runs right to the dowl pin which located the trany. i would talk to the shipping company but i’m sure they will do much except give you the run around. last time i had something get damaged, they told me the person shipping has to do all the claiming and stuff.

Yep, you have to note that stuff at the time you receive it to make a claim.

LTL companies could **** up a wet dream... I hate freight shipping if only because the drivers and carriers never seem to give a crap about what they break or if it arrives in good shape. I'm fighting for a 15K claim on some lab equipment a UPS freight driver dropped on the dock last Friday. Afer telling me he had a delivery i told him to unload it and come back and get me to inspect it, then he never came back. Took me looking around on the dock all Monday to find it and then when I did the cardboard crate was warped, broken open, and looked like it had something heavy on top, then the metal strapping was snapped already...

I thought my experience was bad! Thats really bad. Well they took a look at it this morning and said it must have been dropped. They said I might get $2 a pound. I'm looking into cold mig welding it right now. I have a couple junk blocks to practice on. Hopefully I can pull it off.

My gut feeling is yes, you can do it; all the other trans bolt holes (we hope) are undamaged so i'm thinking if you bolt a trans to the block, this would give you a guide as to where to drill and retap (?).

i saw a video on repair-welding an iron block, but don't remember off hand the title. i think you should see it because i think the repair was very similar to what you're trying/thinking to do. Stitch welding?

i know your engine is a small block, but which one? Is this one special for some reason, is what i'm trying to get at?

it can be done but the key is going to be finding a welder that is both not afraid to do it and knowledgeable enough to do it right. He's probably going to have lots of wrinkles and dirty clothes, if you can find that guy!!!!

As i read your first sentence, how did i guess you were going to mention ups freight???!!! They are horrible, not to mention late........

i am happy with R+L though. They delivered the engine that is now in my truck.

R+L has always seemed like a decent company for LTL, them and YRC. I can tell you the absolute worst though is CEVA... I figured you had a 400 block there because why would it be worth shipping a 350 block, lol

This isn't always true. I mean it is a hard fight, but there is such thing as hidden damage. Shippers do their best to get out of claims. I used to get truck loads of merchandise, computer cases to be exact delivered to my house. Taking a count as I unload, I realize I'm 2pcs short. Kicking the loose shipping paper on the trailer, here are my 2 missing cases hidden under the shipping blankets and paper. They are severly damaged. The shipping driver knew they were damaged and tried to hide them from me so I'd notate 2 short and try to blame it on the shipper instead of the shipping company. So hell yes, I took damaged pieces and filed a claim. Also noted the driver tried to hide them and blame the shipper. They paid that claim real fast and then tried to keep it quiet from the shipper who used them for many many orders to be shipped.

There is hidden damage that might not be notated. So in this case, if they damaged it, then tried to pull the shrink wrap over the damaged corner or it wasn't immediately visible, but it was set on their dock 100% in proper condition and it obviously could have only happened during shipping then they need to make it right.

But NO, I would not use that block. And that's on the starter mount side. Noway I'd use it and you shouldn't have to either. What is it? Are small blocks really that hard to find in Canookville?

It appears he's in Canada. That'll make a difference on what carriers will go N of the USA border.

Ohhh OK, I get it now. It's a 400. Yep, those are a bit more rare and harder to find. I'd imagine even harder in Canada. That makes it a bit more worth considering the welding repair but I still wouldn't like it cuz you shouldn't have to. I'd try to make them find an equal replacement and deliver it rather than settle for a refund. I've had scores before when I find a $1000 item for $300 since someone didn't know what they had and that's all the shipping company wants to pay is what I paid for it, not it's true value. Well then Mr Shipping Co, find me another like it for $300 rather than send me $300. WTH do you think I insured it for $1000?

2) To Paul:
i'm not saying you should to this/that or whatever. i'm just saying this is what I"M going to do: Eventually, i want to build a 400 based engine, but i'm going to go with a NEW chevy performance 400 block. Yes, GM and a few aftermarket companies, i.e., Dart sell NEW 400 blocks.

One of the main reasons i want to go aftermarket is for the very reason listed in this thread----what if you spent a lot of time, effort, and gas to locate a 400 block, only to find out you can't use it/or you're kinda screwed/in a bad predicament?

Sure, the new ones are $2000+, but look at the time and effort you are going to have to go thru to try to fix this one.

Not to mention, the aftermarket blocks are a hell of a lot stronger.
